Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools is Hiring a Campus Police, Patrol/Operations Sergeant Near Savannah, GA

PRIMARY FUNCTION: This position directs, plans, supervises, assigns, reviews and participates in the work of the School Resource Officer and is responsible for Zones/Beats to ensure high visibility police presence on school property; responsible to prevent and respond to crimes against district property, students and personnel. This position is also responsible for the supervision of school crossing guards across the district; coordinating safe routes to school for walking students in collaboration with City/County engineers and local law enforcement; responsible for interviewing, selection, training and retention of workforce. This position may have responsibilities for a focused area and may be assigned to any shift as needed.

REPORTS TO: Campus Police, Sergeant First Class
SALARY SCHEDULE: Grade 14
WORK DAYS: 250

REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Education Level: High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred : College coursework or degree in criminal justice

Experience, Skill, and Certification:
  • Certified by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) as a police officer
  • Minimum of three years' experience as a law enforcement officer
  • Police academy or training in specific areas of security procedures and investigation
  • Ability to operate emergency equipment, weapons, and motor vehicles
  • Ability to maintain crowd control
  • Ability to work rapidly and accurately with names, codes and symbols
  • Ability to prepare and approve accurate and concise written reports
  • Ability to maintain security of confidential materials
  • Ability to judge when to act independently and when to refer situations to supervisor
  • Ability to work cooperatively with employees, students, parents, and public
  • Knowledge of basic law to include criminal and civil statutes
  • Knowledge of police procedures, Criminal Code of Georgia, Juvenile Court Code, and Basic Law Enforcement
  • Ability to work with principals, administrators and other school personnel with regard to juvenile or adult offense and to arbitrate for restitution
  • Ability to supervise approximately sixty locations staffed with trained personnel to provide for the safe crossing of students at designated locations
  • Ability to work flexible schedules to include nights and weekends
Preferred
  • Previous experience as a School Resource Officer
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  1. Enforces regulations and procedures in order to assure the safety of district property, personnel, and students.
  2. Responds to crimes, accidents and emergency situations.
  3. Conforms to prescribed safety standards.
  4. Establishes Incident Command during Critical incidents until a higher-ranking person assumes Command.
  5. Coordinates security and safety efforts with school administrators and other administrative staff.
  6. Conducts internal affairs investigations and investigations of citizen complaints as necessary.
  7. Enforces regulations and procedures in order to assure the safety of district property, personnel, and students.
  8. Conforms to prescribed safety standards.
  9. Establishes Incident Command during Critical incidents until a higher-ranking person assumes Command.
  10. Coordinates security and safety efforts with school administrators and other administrative staff.
  11. Conducts internal affairs investigations and investigations of citizen complaints, as necessary.
  12. Coordinates work schedule for assigned workgroup and assists School Resource Officers with elevated issues. Schedules staff as needed for crime trends and issues, special events and off-duty work.
  13. Oversees payroll and completion of time sheets for submission.
  14. Provides orientation to new School Resource Officers for daily activities.
  15. Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises and reviews work of School Resource Officers
  16. May supervise non-sworn staff.
  17. Provides training, guidance and counseling to assigned personnel.
  18. Complete employee evaluations and reviews as required.
  19. Provides administrative support to management.
  20. Responsible for special programs, projects and department wide functions/activities.
  21. Prepares Incident Action Plans.
  22. Prepares, processes, reviews, approves, and maintains a variety of written reports and records.
  23. Coordinates police activities with other units and/or other law enforcement agencies
  24. Analyzes crime trends and service patterns and develop effective responses. Identifies problems and develops solutions.
  25. Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives. Implement approved policies and procedures.
  26. Speaks before groups and represents the Campus Police at meetings and conferences as directed/approved.
  27. Attend meetings and participate in community outreach initiatives.
  28. May be required to work events such as sporting events, meetings, concerts, graduations, and/or any other related type of activities after and beyond normal working hours.
  29. Participate in the selection of police and school safety staff; identify training deficiencies and provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; conduct personnel investigations; monitor staff attendance, and overall supervision of staff.
  30. Performs all duties of a School Resource Officer as necessary
a) Responsible for maintaining high visibility on school campus in order to safeguard district property, maintains safety of students and staff.
b) Investigates incidents related to burglary, theft, arson, malicious mischief, criminal trespass, and assaults and writes appropriate reports.
c) Interviews, apprehends, arrests, transports, books and advises suspects of certain constitutional rights.
d) Responds to silent alarm calls and fire alarm calls to determine cause and take appropriate action.

31. In addition to the operational duties and responsibilities above, the Patrol/Operations Sergeant may be assigned additional focused areas of responsibility as needed by the Campus Police Division:

Focused Area Assignments: Patrol

a) Responds to calls for service for District locations for suspicious activity.
b) Responds to alarms at all locations across the District.
c) Patrols assigned areas.
d) Assess and inspect buildings.
e) Travel safely to and from designated locations.
f) May participate in bicycle patrol.

Focused Area: Crossing Guards

a) Supervise and monitor the performance of school crossing guards under the jurisdiction of the SCCPSS BOE Police; schedule and assign school crossing guards; coordinate and conduct in -service training for school crossing guards.
b) Monitor schools on a daily basis and ensure adequate coverage at each school site.
c) Ensure school crossing guards are following safety procedures when crossing children
d) Ensure crossing guards are in uniform and properly equipped.
e) Serve as liaison between school administrators, municipal police agencies, and school crossing guards on matters of traffic enforcement and other safety concerns.
f) Establish and maintain working relations with city and county traffic engineers.
g) Investigate and respond to complaint from the public regarding the school crossing guard program, or related issues.
h) Maintain and submit biweekly patrol for assigned staff; coordinate with Campus Police office manager/clerk to ensure crossing guards paychecks are distributed in a timely and accurate manner.
i) Conduct daily field checks on crossing guard staff.
j) Participate in selection of crossing guard staff.
k) Attend community meetings on matters related to school crossing guard and Campus Police issues.
32.Work prolonged and/or irregular and on-call hours including weekends, evenings and holidays
33.Performs other related duties and tasks as assigned or required by Command Staff.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Incumbents will be considered "at will." This position is considered to be "essential personnel, critical staff" when there is an event that creates security challenges or disruptions to district operations. This position may be required to work during identified periods of an emergency as defined in Policy Regulation GBRB-R, Title: Professional Personnel Time Schedules. Appropriate pay will be determined based on the Grade as determined by Human Resources and allowable experience. The work calendar will be 250 days. Nonexempt, (G-14) Revised 07-2023
