The Field Technician, under the direction of the Biologist, is responsible for carrying out field work associated with a variety of assessment such as electrofishing surveys, small mammal trapping, harvest registration and sampling, radio tracking, remote camera surveys, habitat assessments, and vegetation sampling. The position is also responsible for carrying out field work associated with habitat and vegetation projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

• Assists carrying out fish, wildlife and plant assessments.
• Conducts data entry of fish, wildlife, and plant assessments.
• Implements fish, wildlife, and plant habitat improvements.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• All other job-related duties as assigned.

CONTACTS:

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, outside vendors/service providers and staff from State and Federal Natural Resource agencies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position heavy with lifting of 100 pounds with team or dual lifting and frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Physical factors include constant standing, walking, kneeling and bending; frequent sitting carrying/lifting, pushing/pulling, stooping, reaching, manual handling, use of hearing, smell, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception and color/field vision; occasional climbing and crawling, driving and typing. Working conditions include constant exposure to weather, extreme heat, wet/humidity, noise and occasional exposure to vibration and air quality. Potential hazards include frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, equipment and occasional exposure to chemicals, insecticides/pesticides and computer use.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Associate's degree in Natural Resource related field preferred.

Experience: One year of experience performing manual labor in an outdoor setting preferred.

Certification/License: Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Basic knowledge of flora and fauna of Northern Michigan preferred. Basic knowledge of Geographic Information Systems preferred. Organization and planning skills required. Ability to operate off road vehicles; i.e. ATV, boat preferred. Must be able to work flexible schedule, i.e. early mornings and late afternoons. Native American preferred.
