Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is Hiring an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) Near Venice, FL

Job Summary

Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) reflects the mission, vision, and values of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and other regulatory and accreditation standards. The APRN I typically works in an outpatient clinic or area with set hours (i.e., PAT, Employee Health). An APRN is a registered nurse and therefore can perform all duties that are considered routine duties of a registered nurse. In addition, an APRN holds a master’s or doctoral degree. The APRN functions as part of the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentialing committee to provide high-quality, cost-effective advanced nursing care to patients within the APRN’s scope of practice.

Review patient medical record and order appropriate labs, ekg, and imaging . Then the expectation is to follow up on abnormal findings to prevent day of surgery delays or cancellations of procedure.

Communicate with surgeons and anesthesia abnormal results of all lab, x-ray, and EKG reports same day of pre-testing appointment.

Ensure that all appropriate orders, clearances, past medical histories, medication, and testing results are completed prior to surgery.

Review, manage, and follow up with same day pre-tested patients on abnormal results or findings that require further workup. This is in addition to ensuring next day OR patients and charts are complete i.e. all clearances are on chart, communicate with surgeon and anesthesia of any missing information, correct day of surgery labs are ordered, etc. 

Collect medical records and review in a very timely manner. The nurse practitioner must ensure that all previous cardiac, pulmonary, neurologic, etc testing complete. This often leads the nurse practitioner to make a judgement whether a pre-op surgical clearance is necessary. 

Must be able to identify patient who are not medically optimized. This includes proper identification of any acute clinical issues that should be addressed prior to undergoing anesthesia and procedure. The nurse practitioner should be able to make appropriate recommendations to resolve clinical issues prior to as well.

Communicate effectively between surgeon and anesthesia. Provide recommendations to surgeons directly if one believes surgery should be delayed or cancelled.

Identify correct patient, procedure, imaging if applicable, site, consent and H&Ps on every patient who comes through PAT.

Provide pre-operative instructions pertaining to the individual, their procedure, and type of anesthesia to the patient.

Identify and educate patients on enhanced recovery after surgery. This is part of optimizing patients prior to surgery to prevent post operative infections, delayed wound healing, etc. We communicate daily with the ERAS coordinator and help each other where needed. 

E-script appropriate perioperative medications.

Participate in monthly PAT nurse staff meetings, ERAS committee, surgical site infections committee, educate staff changes.

Be aware of Anesthesia Guidelines per ASA. Update policies and protocols to reflect guidelines to improve standard of care. This reflects SMH culture and standards.

Required Qualifications

- Require advanced degree from an accredited school or college of nursing* *Must have had a Medicare number in the State of Florida prior to 1/1/03; if not, must have a Master’s Degree in nursing in addition to being a Registered Professional Nurse who is authorized by Florida to practice in accordance with state law.- Require approved APRN board certification**. **Must be certified as a APRN by a recognized national certifying body having established standards for APRN’s. The following organizations are recognized national certifying bodies for the Nurse Practitioner: American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; American Nurses Credentialing Center; National Certification Corporation for Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties; National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners & Nurses; Oncology Nurses Certification Corporation; Critical Care Certification Corporation; National Commission on Certification; and American Association of Heart Failure Nurses.

- Prefer demonstrated clinical competency skills.- Prefer knowledge of state, federal and local health care agencies and programs.- Prefer effective leadership and strong interpersonal skills.- Prefer ability to work independently and collaboratively.- Prefer demonstrated written & verbal communication & strong analytical skills.- Prefer effective interaction skills to ensure the successful care of patients in the clinical setting.- Prefer demonstrated knowledge of pharmacology as it relates to health care practice and current prescription writing skills/DEA licensing.- Prefer demonstrated skills in documentation in medical records to substantiate accurate billing.- Prefer ability to work independently and effectively with physicians and other allied health personnel in the hospital and/or office setting.- Prefer knowledge of relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations.
