BASIC FUNCTION:
Under general supervision, perform journey-level mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a variety of District vehicles and equipment, including gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and grounds maintenance equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of experience inspecting, servicing, and repairing equipment or vehicles that weigh 14,000 pounds or more.

EQUIVALENCY PROVISION:
Possession of an ASE Certification may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS/INFORMATION:
  • Possession of a California Driver License and proof of insurability are required
  • Employees within this classification are subject to alcohol/controlled substance tests
  • Employees within this classification are required to obtain the licenses and certifications necessary to meet the minimum qualifications of an SMMUSD Bus Driver within the six-month probationary period to maintain employment
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

JOB DUTIES:
  • Repairs and maintains gasoline, diesel-powered equipment, including buses, heavy vehicles, trucks, vans, cars, and other large and small grounds equipment
  • Inspects and diagnoses mechanical malfunctions in gasoline and diesel engines; removes and installs engines, clutch assemblies, transmissions, differentials, and other assemblies
  • Diagnoses, repairs, and rebuilds engine electrical and ignition systems, such as batteries, distributors, relays, alternators, starters, and related systems
  • Determines necessary parts for repair; requisitions equipment, tools, parts, and materials according to established procedures
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance safety checks and inspections; completes and submits vehicle maintenance and California Highway Patrol inspection reports as required
  • Repairs and installs tires; maintains proper inflation level of tires
  • Lubricates buses, automotive, and other power equipment, replaces defective lubrication fittings; inspects and fills gearboxes with lubricants
  • Adjusts and line brakes; maintains, rebuilds, and replaces air and hydraulic brake system components; changes and balances tires
  • Operates a variety of specialized electronic diagnosis equipment and machinery
  • Conducts road tests for vehicles; responds to emergency road calls and makes roadside repairs as necessary
  • Operates a school bus to transport students as assigned
  • Maintains shop area, equipment, and tools in a safe, clean, and orderly condition
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

SUPERVISION AND WORKING CONDITIONS

SUPERVISION:
General supervision is received from management within Transportation. No supervision of other staff is exercised.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Shop environment; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work; subject to driving during adverse weather conditions.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Lifting and carrying heavy objects; bending; reaching above the shoulder, overhead, and horizontally; crawling; seeing to perform and observe repairs; dexterity of hands and fingers to safely and efficiently operate specialized tools and equipment; standing for extended periods of time; hearing to listen to engines; hearing and speaking to exchange information.
HAZARDS:
Work around grease, diesel, and gasoline powered equipment; solvents, chemical cleaners, machinery having moving parts; exhaust fumes and gasoline.

SELECTION PROCEDURES
THE APPLICATION PROCESS:

EXAMINATION PROTESTS:

Any protest must include rationale to support the protest and must be based on illegal discrimination, abuse of discretion, or procedure/process error. ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY LIST:
This examination process shall be open to all qualified applicants and shall result in one integrated eligibility list. All eligibility lists shall be established in accordance with Personnel Commission rules and shall be established for a period one (1) year, unless otherwise noted, or until there are fewer than three (3) ranks of eligible candidates who are available. Candidates are placed on the eligibility list in rank order according to their final examination score. Final examination scores will not change, but ranking may change as other candidates are added or removed from the list.
ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT:
Generally, new employees start at the first step on the appointed salary schedule. When filling a permanent vacancy, a new employee may request a higher salary placement based on having training and experience that greatly exceeds the minimum qualifications. An employee may submit a formal request for advanced step consideration on or after the first day of employment. Education transcripts, training certificates, and additional references may be requested for verification purposes.

PREFERENCE POINTS: Seniority credit, based on length of service, is added to the final passing score of permanent employees. Veteran's credits are added for entry level examinations as follows: 5 points for non-disabled veterans; 10 points for disabled veterans. SALARIES, MERIT INCREASES & ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT: Salaries generally begin on the first step of the appropriate salary range. Permanent employees receive an increase after six months of continuous satisfactory service and equal raises based on merit at subsequent one year intervals for a total of five increases. Relevant experience and/or education in excess of entry requirements may permit employment at other than the first step. If employed at a higher step, salary increases are granted annually until reaching the end of the salary range.
BENEFITS: Permanent employees will receive paid holidays, sick leave, vacation and longevity benefits per bargaining unit contract or Personnel Commission Merit Rules. The District offers a comprehensive package of insurance benefits to full-time employees and their families, which includes major medical and dental. (Permanent employees who work less than full-time, but a minimum of four (4) hours will contribute an amount proportionate to the number of assigned hours for major medical and dental.) Employees belong to the Public Employees' Retirement System to which the District makes contributions approximately equal to those deducted from the employee's pay.
