PRIMARY PURPOSE:Assist the teacher in providing students with the opportunities to realize their academic potential, through the preparation and management of classroom activities while under the supervision of a certified teacher.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Certification:

1. High School diploma or GED
2. Eligible for certification as an Aide I or II
3. Must be Highly Qualified as described by the No child left Behind Act. (At least 48 college credits or have a PACT Certificate.)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

1. Ability to lift 30 lbs. without assistance

1. Some experience working with children

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Assist the teacher with individual students in all curricular areas. The assistance may be individual, small group, or large group.

2. Assist the teacher with instructional materials, gathering assignments, and disseminating materials to other instructional staff when necessary.

3. Be familiar with and able to use curriculum and other available materials to assist student progress.

4. Assist the teacher in preparing supplemental materials for learning. This includes creating alternate assignments, if needed.

5. Assist in preparing and maintaining the classroom and materials for instruction.

6. Record points earned and points deducted as part of the DAEP behavior management system.

7. Reinforce building, classroom, and/or individual behavior plans.
8. Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom.

9. Collect and file records, as directed, to assist students and teachers.

10. Assist in inventory and maintenance of equipment and supplies.

11. Actively monitor the classroom. Walk around the classroom to help students throughout the day.

12. Provide assistance in an environment other than the designated supervising teacher’s classroom, as needed.

13. Understand the individual differences and needs of students.

14. Provide assistance to other staff members when needed.

15. Participate in in-service training programs provided by the district.

16. Help to de-escalate students who display aggressive behaviors when needed.
