Purpose:
The Child Studies Program at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, seeks to hire a Quarterly Adjunct Lecturer with a specialty in Urban Education. The position involves teaching two upper division courses. Urban Education & Multiculturalism for Winter quarter 2023 and Advocacy for Children for Spring quarter 2023. Urban Education and Multiculturalism focuses on education in large urban contexts, with a particular emphasis on students from low-income environments. Ethnicity and class are two critical lenses that examine the reasons for: (a) historical contexts underlying education in urban contexts; (b) lack of cultural competence, school failure, underachievement, and the preschool to prison pipeline; and (c) the politics and policy of education reform. This course requires participation in community-based learning experiences off campus and fulfills the Experiential Learning for Social Justice requirement. Advocacy for Children focuses on interdisciplinary examination of child and family advocacy and the prevention of child abuse and neglect within a risk and resilience framework. Requires participation in community-based learning experiences off campus. Both quarters are 10 weeks long, with an 11th week for finals.
PURPOSE:
The Child Studies Program at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, seeks applicants for Quarterly Adjunct Lecturer (non-tenure track) positions to teach courses in Urban Education and Multiculturalism and Advocacy for Children. Specific assignments will be made according to the academic qualifications of the individual and programmatic need. Santa Clara University is on the quarter system and the quarters are 10 weeks long with an 11th week for final examinations.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
(1)Terminal Degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Education or a closely related field is preferred. Applications who are ABD or possess a Master's Degree, accompanied by commensurate academic experience in Education or closely-related field (5-7 years of college
or professional teaching) will be considered.
(2) Applications without an advanced degree but can demonstrate
exceptional professional experience as an urban educator and successful
teaching at the collegiate level will be considered.
(3) Excellent communication skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstration of inclusive pedagogical practices that advance
SCU goals of diversity and equity, demonstrated experience teaching
and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.
SALARY: $8,175 for each course
RESPONSIBILITIES:
TEACHING (100%)
Teaching duties include but are not limited to:
Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with assigned courses, including:
a. Teaching a course load of no more than two courses per quarter, and no more than four per academic year;
b. Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively;
c. Assigning and evaluating assignments that align with the course description and course learning outcomes, and providing timely feedback to students;
d. Holding regular weekly office hours on campus;
e. Submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline;
f. Administering numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses;
g. Where applicable, teaching from an approved syllabus for the University Core courses assigned or working with the Chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.
