Purpose:
The Classics Department at Santa Clara University , a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for a full-time continuing, non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Renewable Term Lecturer. The department seeks a broadly-trained Classical philologist with expertise in one or more North African, Near Eastern, or Asian cultures. Scholars who work on cultural interactions or influence between non-Hellenic and Hellenic cultures or who adopt a comparative approach are especially encouraged to apply. The position duties are teaching/advising (70%), service (15%), and professional activity (15%). The expected teaching load is 7 undergraduate courses over three academic quarters (Fall, Winter, and Spring). Renewable Term Lecturers are appointed for a term of three years. Reappointment to subsequent terms of three years and then six years are available depending upon the availability of funds, persistent programmatic need, and superior teaching, service, and professional activity. Promotion to Senior lecturer is possible after 9 years of experience. The appointment start date is September 1, 2024. The ability to teach Ancient Greek and Latin at every undergraduate level is essential. Candidates should also be able to teach a two-quarter Cultures and Ideas sequence in the University's Core Curriculum and be eager to design and teach new courses for other areas of the core. A record of teaching excellence is required. Applicants should have a terminal degree (Ph.D.) in Classics or a closely-related field, but applicants who are ABD will be considered provided that their degree will be in hand by September 1, 2004.

Minimum Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Classics or a closely-related field, to be completed by September 1, 2024
Ability to teach Ancient Greek and Latin at all undergraduate levels
Expertise in one or more ancient cultures other than Ancient Greek and Roman cultures
Ability to teach a range of core courses
Desirable Qualifications
Experience with inclusive pedagogical practices that advance SCU goals of diversity and equity.
Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.
Responsibilities
Faculty responsibilities are specified by the Santa Clara University Faculty Handbook (sec. 3.6). Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Teaching and Advising (70%)
Teaching a standard teaching load of seven sections of Classics courses. Specific courses will be determined by programmatic need.
Designing and teaching courses that contribute to curriculum development and the university core.
Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.
Assigning and evaluating written work, projects, and exams that align with course or core learning objectives and providing timely feedback to students.
Conducting all class meetings and exams, including holding the final exam at the scheduled time.
Holding regular office hours each week on campus.
Assigning and submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate, and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.
Administering narrative evaluations approved by the Department Chair for each course taught.
Serving as an advisor to assigned students.
Fulfilling other academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College or the Department Chair.
Service (15%)
As appropriate to rank, engaging in service to the Classics Department, College, University, and Profession, (as specified by the Santa Clara University Faculty Handbook - sec. 3.4A, 3.6), such as serving on committees, participating in professional organizations and activities, participating in and providing support for department and campus events.
Participating in assessments of student learning for courses in the department
Professional Development (15%)
Participating in professional activities that are appropriate to the discipline and that contribute to their primary responsibility for teaching. Note: Renewable Term Lecturers shall not be held to the same standards of scholarship as tenure-track faculty.
