Job Summary

Develops, evaluates, and implements new tests, methodologies, or products for the laboratory under the intellectual and scientific guidance of laboratory directors. Assumes responsibility for improvement of existing methods or implementation of new technology of proven validity. Maintains complete and accurate documentation of data generated and work performed. Helps in organizing new method verification or validation data, preparation of data for publication and peer review, and participates in formal presentations.

Participates in the training of laboratory staff, residents and students in principles of methods and applications within the laboratory. Aids in the investigation, installation, evaluation and purchase of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, computer software and hardware, new reagent systems, and other specialty items.

Mentors others when needed in the performance of their duties. May be required to become competent on select clinical assays and work on the clinical laboratory bench when needed.

Partners closely with laboratory leadership, clinical operations, bio-informatics, technology solutions and others as applicable. Oversees and leads clinical and research development projects. Provides scientific expertise and clinical strategy to assigned clinical development programs.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, medical laboratory science or other relevant science required

Master's degree from an accredited institution in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology and two years of relevant laboratory experience preferred.

Four years of relevant laboratory experience preferred.

Reference Lab Only: Test and project development experience, including, but not limited to, reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays, microbial analysis, Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) assays in a clinical lab setting is desirable but not required.

Genetics Lab Only: Molecular test design and development experience, including, but not limited to, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique, quantitative reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays, fragment analysis, next generation sequencing (NGS), Sanger sequencing, and gene expression assays; Cytogenetic and/or Molecular assay development experience in a clinical lab setting is desirable but not required.

Experience with accreditation agencies, including College of American Pathologists (CAP), New York State (NYS), FDA, etc. is desirable but not required.

Possession of one of the following certifications is desired but not required: national certification for Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Molecular Biology (MB), Specialist in Molecular Biology (SMB), Cytogenetics (CG) through an approved Health and Human Services (HHS) agency, for example American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or others as applicable.

Maintain continuing education credits equivalent to the state requirements as needed for license and certifications.
