Position & Candidate Description

The Director of Finance will oversee the financial operations of the company and aid in decision making based on the company’s financial stability. This highly visible role monitors cash flow and meets with the CEO to discuss the best practices for company finances and develops strategic plans to improve the company’s overall financial health.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Finance and Accounting
    • Develop and execute the company’s financial strategy, alongside the CEO and COO.
    • Develop plans for growth to increase company profitability while reducing expenses.
    • Develop and execute accounting procedures and controls.
    • Direct and manage processes for financial forecasting, budgets and consolidations, planning and analysis including the development of budgets and proformas for potential new locations.
    • Perform regular financial analysis of operating results and review of all balance reconciliations monthly.
    • Establish and maintain stable cash flow management policies and procedures and ensure cash resources are available for daily operations.
    • Compare sales and profit projections to actual figures and budgeted expenses to actual expenses; make or oversee any necessary adjustments to future projections and budgets.
    • Analyze operations to identify areas in need of reorganization, downsizing, or elimination, alongside the CEO and COO
    • Study long-range economic trends and projects their impact on future growth in sales and market share.
    • Initiate and implement new accounting processes and financial applications.
  • Manage relationships with ownership, investors, Board of Directors and other third-parties
    • Participate in regular leadership meetings to discuss the direction of the Houses and present financial data and reports to investors and the Board of Directors.
    • Communicate clearly and directly with managers and employees concerning fiscal performance expectations and accountability.
    • Collaborate with House leadership teams to enhance revenues and control expenses to improve the bottom line by being part of the team and suggesting opportunities in revenue growth and expense efficiencies.
    • Direct and manage third-party relationships for audit, tax, insurance and treasury needs.
  • Leadership Responsibilities
    • Perform annual performance reviews for direct reports.
    • Meet regularly with direct reports to ensure performance goals are being met and department priorities and initiatives align with those of the organization.
    • Meet regularly with senior leadership team to ensure company financial performance and trends are being proactively discussed and addressed.
    • Set challenging and realistic goals for growth, performance, and profitability.
    • Foster a growth oriented, positive, and encouraging environment while keeping employees and management accountable to company policies, procedures, and guidelines.
    • Cultivating and providing opportunities for rising talent within the organization.

To be successful in this role, you must be:

  • An Experienced Practitioner: A degree in business administration, accounting or finance or commensurate experience is required. We are seeking someone with a minimum of 8 years' demonstrated experience (and evident interest) in start-up or small business accounting and finance management- including finance and accounting process and procedure development.
  • Numbers Obsessed: This role centers around Common House financial and accounting operations. You will be responsible for helping the team produce the financial statements, responding to questions from ownership, and helping find ways to improve the company’s expense profile.
  • A Servant Leader: You will interact daily with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure company financial performance is discussed and the number stories are being effectively and accurately communicated. You must have the ability– and more importantly desire– to work cross-functionally with the C-suite and location managers on a regular basis to ensure accounting accuracy and efficiency.
  • Bonus points for a CPA certification, Master’s degree, and/or experience in the hospitality and events industry!

To be successful at Common House, you must be:

  • A Start-Up’er – Common House is a start-up and an innovator in the social club space. Likewise, we need our Director of Finance to embody the same love of start-up chaos, with an ability to jump in and begin assisting as soon as they start. You should have experience operating as a team, while also being comfortable working under developing, autonomous direction.
  • Entrepreneurial -- If you've ever felt the satisfaction of building a team, a department or a practice from the ground-up, you know it takes a certain combination of grit, skill and enthusiasm. Additionally, this role will require a candidate who practices independent judgment and discretion, as many duties performed are of a critical & confidential nature.
  • Tech savvy – We use a variety of platforms and software, so the ability to navigate and integrate technology will be an important aspect of this role. Additionally, we’ll take your industry tech recommendations to heart, so come prepared to tell us what works and what doesn’t. Must be proficient in Microsoft, Google Suite and other Operations-specific tools.
  • Nimble & Focused – No day is ever the same at Common House, which means no day in this role will be the same either. Your ability to keep the team on track through the chaos of club grand openings, strategic planning, and running our daily operations will be critical.
