Sand Springs Public Schools is Hiring a Teacher Assistant (Paraprofessional)- Northwoods Fine Arts Academy Near Sand Springs, OK

2024 - 2025 School Year

Position: Teacher Assistant (Paraprofessional) 

Location: Northwoods Fine Arts Academy (Elementary)

Supervisor: Site Principal Laura Hamilton

Reports to:  Assigned Teacher, Building Principal

Supervises: N/A

Status: Nonexempt

Evaluation: Annually

Qualifications:

  • Have a high school diploma or a General Educational Development (GED) diploma, PLUS:
  • Option A:
    Hold an associate’s degree (or higher)
    OR
  • Option B:
    Complete at least two years (48 credit hours) of study at an institution of higher education.n
    OR
  • Option C:
    Pass the Oklahoma General Education (OGET) Test. (See Office of Educational Quality and Accountability for testing.)
    OR
  • Option D:
    Pass the Praxis ParaProfessional Assessment Test (Passing score is 455)
  • Pass an Oklahoma Criminal Background Check
    • Application for Oklahoma Title I Paraprofessional Credential
    • $10 processing fee (check, cashier’s check, or money order) made payable to the Oklahoma State Department of Education (will be required if hired for this position)

Job Goal:

Provides adult support to small groups of students or one-on-one with an individual student to assist the student in unique educational goals. This position could require additional training for dispensing medication, office documentation, or additional assignments.

Evaluation: Annually by Supervising Teacher and Site Principal

Regular Requirements:

Stand for extended periods; walk; twist at the neck and trunk; bend and reach with hands and arms overhead, above the shoulder, and horizontally; repetitive use of fingers and hands to grasp and/or operate equipment and demonstrate lessons to students; lift/move up to 50 pounds.

Occasional Requirements: Lift/move up to 100 pounds

Visual Requirements: Close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, ability to adjust focus

Hearing/Speaking Requirements: Adequate to exchange information

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Note - these duties vary based on individual student needs and individualized education plans.

Typical duties may include:

• Monitors students on district-provided transportation and assists students in getting on or off buses and vans.

• Accompanies students during meals and assists students with getting and eating meals and cleaning up after meals.

• Accompanies students to classes or therapy services, monitors behavior (intervening as needed), and assists with classwork.

• Assists students with motor, balance, social, and life skills.

• Possibly assists students with personal care, including dressing, toileting, and diapering.

• Monitors students during nap times.

• Cleans and maintains an efficient work area.

• Assists with instruction, errands, and copies related to the assigned student(s).

• Attends IEP and other meetings and training as requested.

• Alerts assigned teacher of concerns related to the student.

• Maintains confidentiality of student information.

• Complies with all federal, state, and local laws, board policies, and procedures.

• Utilizes professional behavior in all school-related interactions.

• Assists teacher in monitoring students’ progress toward academic and behavioral IEP goals.

• Reinforces learning in small groups or with an individual student while the teacher works with other students.

• Assists the teacher in observing, recording, and charting behavior.

• Assists the teacher with crisis problems and behavior management.

• Provides one-on-one tutoring if scheduled when a student would not otherwise receive instruction from a teacher.

• Scores objective tests and papers and maintains appropriate records for teachers.

• Carries out instructional programs designed by the teacher.

• Works with the teacher to develop classroom schedules.

• Operates and maintains classroom equipment.

• Takes over a class for a short period.

• Supervises children in the hallway, lunchroom, and playground.

• Performs all other tasks as the supervisor may assign.

* Assisting students with toileting needs or changing. 

* Implement and enforce behavior intervention plans for individual students.

* Additional training may be required for Diabetes Training
