Provide students with appropriate physical education and health learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop motor skills and physical development among younger students and proper exercise and eating habits among older students. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s Degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate, with required endorsements for subject/level assigned
ESL Certification required within six months of employment.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of subjects assigned
General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
At least one year of student teaching or approved internship
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Use strategies and activities which result in:
increased student performance in content area and on standardized assessments specific to the subject taught
increased student success in meeting campus performance objectives addressing each of the Academic Excellence Indicators
Develop and implement plans for the curriculum program assigned and show written evidence of preparation as required and meet the needs of students.
Prepare lessons that reflect accommodation for individual student differences.
Present the subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect accommodation for individual needs of students assigned.
Communicate and promote expectations for high level performance from students and recognize excellence in achievement.
Develop instructional activities, which incorporate appropriate student learning styles to meet student needs.
Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established by Individual Education Plans.
Attend ARD meetings and be prepared to discuss students’ strengths, weaknesses, and abilities.
Communicate and interacts with students, parents, staff, and community in a positive manner.
Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for instructional assistants, and/or volunteers.
Use technologies in the teaching/learning process as available and appropriate.
Utilize technology to present content to the class.
Consistently assess student achievement through formal and informal testing and provide progress and interim reports as needed and required.
Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned.
Present for students a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school district.
Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Manage student behavior and administer discipline according to board policies, administrative regulations, and the IEP through the implementation of a proactive and positive classroom management plan.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials as requested.
Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
Participate in campus and district staff development program.
Maintain and improve professional competence through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced courses at institutes of higher learning.
Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvement.
Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible and inspires students to live healthy, active lifestyles.
Keeps informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
Maintain accurate attendance records and identify chronic attendance problems.
Follow district and campus policy in assignment of meaningful homework, which supports curriculum goals and objectives.
Follow district and/or campus grading policy in the assignment of grades.
Attend and participate in faculty meetings, department meetings, and committee meetings as required.
Report to work at the designated site on a regular daily basis according to the established work schedule.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Principal and/or Assistant Principal.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise assigned instructional assistants, aides, and/or classroom volunteers. Assist in the supervision of assigned student teachers. *Assigned as District’s Physical Education Coordinator.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Work inside and outside; prolonged standing and walking; lifting and carrying; in-district travel as assigned and occasional out-of-district travel. Be physically fit and active.
School district employees may be required to work from home and use their personal electronic devices.
  • Coordinator Districtwide Responsibilities:
Lead the development process for the PreK-12 physical education scope and sequence
Design, develop, and lead professional development for physical education teachers that enhance their programs at the campus level, to include annual physical education staff training on the district wellness curriculum(s)
Participate in and attend all School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) meetings facilitated by the Physical Education/Nutrition/Fitness advisor committee
Facilitate monthly meetings for the SHAC workgroup to focus on areas of growth and the areas of success in our district, and provide feedback to the SHAC at all quarterly meetings
Ensure the Fitnessgram license is updated annually, oversee the application of the annual Fitnessgram testing at each campus, and submit assessment data to the state prior to the deadline. Send a copy of each student’s results to their parent/guardian
Coordinate with the American Heart Association (AHA) and each campus during the American Heart Challenge and ensure heart health awareness lessons are being implemented to educate our students on the benefits and risks of physical activity and inactivity
Promote and monitor the High School graduating senior class on the completion of their Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification to include printing, laminating, and distributing cards
Ensure and verify that all physical education (PE) instructors fulfill CPR certification criteria mandated by the state
Organize a fall and spring camping trip through our partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife’s (TPWD) organization, Texas Outdoor Families (TOF), for families in our district to experience outdoor recreation in our local state parks
Generate an annual sign up sheet for outdoor education equipment from the TPWD grant for all P.E. teachers in order to minimize scheduling conflicts of equipment needed at each campus throughout the year
Deliver and distribute outdoor education equipment as scheduled, as well as maintain all equipment for longevity of use. Maintain all outdoor education materials and deliver equipment, as scheduled
Record and maintain a current inventory of PE equipment and place orders for new equipment when necessary
Work alongside the district curriculum and instruction coordinators as well as the SHAC president and committee to update the physical education curriculum per state requirements. Ensure our district’s PE Teachers are poised with the necessary materials and resources to be successful in their gyms
Ensure annual revisions to the physical education curriculum and its integration into the Canvas platform for secondary schools
Observe physical education teachers each semester and provide positive and critical feedback to improve student learning outcomes
Collaborate and assist in the facilitation of outdoor education and afterschool physical activity programs with Texas State University’s student leaders in their Recreation and Physical Education programs, as well as the San Marcos Youth Services Coordinator
