JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Registered Occupational Therapist

LENGTH OF WORK YEAR: 174 days consistent with the school calendar

SALARY: Salary Schedule

STARTING DATE: 2023-2024 School Year

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Registered Occupational Therapist who is licensed to practice in the state of Colorado

2. Eligible for a Colorado Department of Education Professional Special Services OT license 

3. In-depth knowledge of motor and sensory motor disabilities in an educational environment preferred

4. Experience with school populations (ages birth to 21) preferred

JOB GOAL: To maximize student achievement (participation, independence and success) through screenings, assessment, direct therapy services, and consultation for students with identified educational needs and/or IEP’s across all school environments.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Participate in screenings and assessment procedures for students including pre referral and Response to Intervention. Communicate findings to the educational teams, and when appropriate, other professionals and agencies concerned with the student(s).
  2. Collaborate and consult with general, special education, specialty teachers and other support staff to meet the needs of all students.
  3. Available for consultation to IEP teams, building level special education and child study teams and for assisting with setting up 504 plans and accommodations as needed for students.
  4. Assist with the development of the IEP’s with goals that are functional and educationally relevant using evidence-based interventions and strategies to support a student’s educational programs. The occupational therapist’s role in the interventions and strategies will focus on, but is not limited to, self help skills, access skills, fine motor development, visual perceptual skills, visual motor skills, sensory processing strategies, positioning, use of adaptive equipment and/or assistive technology and increased independence with functional life skills.
    1. Provide training to paraprofessionals and teachers in regards to safe and proper handling and positioning of students with disabilities as well as the equipment (including assistive technology as appropriate) that the student is using. Also, provide training on inclusion strategies, increasing independence across school settings and appropriate adaptations for educational activities.
    2. Maintain records/data collection necessary for placement, progress monitoring and ongoing programming. Utilize the computerized IEP and records systems available.
      1. Facilitate in-service education and other professional development as appropriate.
      2. Professionally supervise and monitor the job performance of any assigned occupation therapy assistants (COTA) and/or occupational therapy students.
      3. Other related duties as assigned by the Director of Exceptional Student Services and/or the Executive Director.
