Position Overview:

Under the general direction of the Director of Nursing, is responsible for directing and coordinating clinical nursing activities and supervision of facility functions on assigned shifts in absence of an administrator.

Essential Functions:

  • Monitors nursing care standards.
  • Participates as part of the Nursing Management Team. Provides input for changes and improvements in nursing practice and policy.
  • Maintains and practices effective management techniques.
  • Evaluates systems by which patient care is delivered on assigned shift and implements and/or recommends appropriate changes.
  • Investigates nursing and patient care problems as they occur and uses results to improve nursing performance and patient care.
  • Assumes the role of the charge nurse when unit cannot be covered.
  • Acts as consultant and assists in problem solving for other departments, which are operational during shift.
  • Makes administrative decisions as needed.
  • Serves as a resource person and assists nursing staff on units in identifying and solving nursing care problems.
  • Interprets and ensures compliance of legislative requirements for patient care. (Title 22)
  • Identifies and assists in solving problem areas between nursing personnel and other departments in delivery of patient care.
  • Assesses use of supplies, equipment, etc. to maintain effective cost controls.
  • Maintains and follows through on special projects for units as initiated by Head Nurse/Assistant Nursing Director.
  • Responds to emergency, fire and disaster calls.
  • Interprets for staff as needed and maintains facility's and Nursing policies and procedures.
  • Keeps Director of Nursing informed of current shift activities and developments.
  • Provides continual input to Head Nurse/Charge Nurse, Assistant Director of Nursing regarding staff performance and problems.
  • Analyzes nursing needs and personnel needs on shifts adjusting as necessary and gives input to Director of Nursing.
  • Knows and applies contractual requirements regarding staffing and scheduling.
  • Maintains and ensures effective staff utilization.
  • Assists staff in developing and maintaining nursing care plans to insure the nursing process.
  • Provides spontaneous teaching for personnel in nursing area as occasion warrants or gives necessary information of needs to staff Development Instructor.
  • Follows through with unit orientation for all new personnel in clinical nursing areas.
  • Clarifies the functions and responsibilities of nursing personnel with staff as needed.
  • Conducts performance reviews for nursing personnel on assigned shift in conjunction with Charge Nurse.
  • Assists staff to work effectively and acquire increased nursing
  • competence. Identifies individual job-related learning needs and assists individual in developing a plan of action to meet these needs.
  • Coaches, counsels and takes disciplinary action as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Current State of California RN License.
  • 3 – 5 years recent nursing experience required
  • Previous Supervisory/Management experience strongly preferred
  • Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred
  • long -term care experience preferred
  • Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing.
  • Certified in Basic Life Support.
