HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Horticulture Supervisor oversees landscape areas, projects, and programs. This position is also responsible for oversight of a team. This position reports to the Director of Horticulture.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Leads a team that operates within a sub department of the horticulture department. In collaboration with the Director, this position is responsible for hiring, training, and performance management. Provides recommendations around policies and procedures that impact the staff.
  • Act as a horticultural subject matter expert for other departments, guests and external partners.
  • Conducts a variety of safety inspections, safety and equipment training, drills and other supervisory administrative work.
  • Develops project work and pricing estimates, and conducts related coordination meetings with staff, vendors and
contractors. Responsibilities include collaboration on major construction projects as directed.
  • Assists in developing and implementing landscape design, installation, maintenance and water management. Responsibilities include researching, recommending and acquiring new plant materials in support of wildlife welfare and botanical collections record keeping processes.
  • With the guidance of the Director, makes budget recommendations and administers the sub department’s budget.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are seeking a candidate that leads by example and exemplifies the following leadership competencies: interpersonal savvy, developing talent, managing conflict, effective communication, and resilience. The ideal candidate is an experienced horticulturist with in-depth equipment operation skills and a hands-on approach to training and safety. We seek a collaborative and team-oriented individual with experience developing high performing technically skilled team members.
  • JOB EXPERIENCE
  • Coursework or specialized training in horticulture, arboriculture, irrigation/water management, landscape construction, design, or a related field
  • One or more years of experience in a leadership capacity - either formally or informally
  • SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
  • Knowledge of plant identification and cultural characteristics
  • Possesses leadership skills to effectively supervise a team
  • Able to plan and organize work
  • Able and comfortable with using computers and applicable software programs and Microsoft Office products
  • Able to work well with teams and individuals in a diverse environment
  • Able to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
  • Able to give presentations in front of others
  • Knowledge of irrigation principles and water management
  • Knowledge of turf management and fertilization
  • Knowledge of integrated pest management
  • Knowledge of landscape and exhibit design
  • Knowledge of nursery operations
  • Knowledge of GIS and plant record systems
