San Diego State University Research Foundation is Hiring a Work Study Assistant Near San Diego, CA

Overview

The salary range for this position is $17.50 - $19.00 per hour depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable. 

The San Diego State University Institute for Transformative Education promotes college access and completion for underserved students through excellence and innovation in education. The SDSU Upward Bound Health Careers Opportunities (UB-HCO) is an educational opportunity program to assist high school students in pursuing postsecondary education programs. The Upward Bound-HCO Program is funded by three grants: Upward Bound Classic, Upward Bound STAR, and California Medicine Scholars Program.

Reporting directly to the Upward Bound-HCO Coordinator of Work-Study Internships (CWSI), the Work-Study Assistant plays a pivotal role in advancing the objectives of the UB-HCO Program, supporting the Upward Bound team with recruitment of work-study and pre-internship students. The ideal candidate will be committed to supporting first-generation and underserved students to develop their personal and educational career goals. The incumbent should demonstrate initiative and leadership within a collaborative team environment. The incumbent will follow the program's mission by assisting the Work-Study Internship Coordinator to support the students’ social, emotional, and academic growth.

During the academic year, the incumbent will support the CWSI to follow up with the work-study students and pre-internship students from the previous summer. The incumbent will actively meet with these students twice per month during the academic year. They will collaborate with the Upward Bound staff to design objectives and activities for the Saturday Sessions which reflect students’ interests in STEAM and health careers. The incumbent will support the CWSI in their role as liaison to the CASA Program in the College of Sciences and the Health Careers Program in Student Affairs.

Responsibilities

Work-Study Internship Assistance (95% - Academic Year)

  • Collaborate with UB-HCO team to recruit 93 students for UB Classic and 84 students for UB STAR during the academic year with particular emphasis on work-study and pre-internship students.
  • Support in recruitment of 90 UB-HCO high school students for the program’s Summer Academy with particular emphasis on work-study and pre-internship students.
  • Assist CWSI with selecting continuing students as participants.
  • Maintain a viable waitlist of prospective students.
  • Assist CWSI with building rapport with potential mentors matching student participants in mentorships appropriate for their interests and skills.
  • Assist CWSI with site visits and observations/assessments at all 5 UB-HCO Classic and 4 UB-HCO STAR high schools.
  • Perform any other duties necessary to support the program for the benefit of students and staff such as maintaining calendars, liaising with the UB-HCO team, community, and all other ITE Staff as necessary.

Work-Study Internship Assistant (95% - Summer Only)

  • Assist CWSI in the planning and execution of internship and pre-internship sites for the Summer Academy.
  • Collaborate with CWSI to create agendas and coordinate events.
  • Maintain daily communication with participants to facilitate program objectives.
  • Lead small group sessions and assist in evaluating internship sites.
  • Provide support and guidance to participants in the Summer Academy.

Qualifications

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including English grammar and proofreading proficiency.
  • Ability to analyze problems independently and develop practical solutions.
  • Proficiency in standard office procedures.
  • Familiarity with Mac and PC operating systems, Google Workspace, and electronic media applications.
  • Capability to support in creating compelling promotional materials.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to facilitate and co-lead group activities.

Minimum Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience in an office or administrative environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of office/administrative experience.
  • Experience working with underrepresented low-income adolescents.
  • An associate degree in business, sociology, education or a related field is preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree with formal training in school counseling is preferred.
  • General knowledge of San Diego County schools.
  • Experience in student support and outreach organizations.
  • Proficiency in electronic databases for reporting data.
  • Experience in community outreach is highly desirable.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is a plus.
