San Diego Convention Center is Hiring a HVAC Engineer Near San Diego, CA

Hourly Compensation: $39.01

PURPOSE
The HVAC Engineer carries out the daily operations, repair, and maintenance of the facility’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. This also includes managing the building automation system to manage the assets and create diagnostic reports. Other tasks include serving assets with refrigeration components and maintaining the carbon monoxide monitoring system.

Scheduled hours for this position will be 1:00pm to 9:00pm. 
This is a union position with Operating Engineers 501.

CANDIDATE DESCRIPTION
The candidate must be a highly motivated, detail oriented, results-driven individual who works collaboratively with the staff of all levels throughout the organization. This person can manage multiple priorities and cooperatively and enthusiastically switch between responsibilities at a moment’s notice. Will collaborate with various internal departments throughout the facility to understand and fulfill the organization’s material and service requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Maintains and repairs all HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) equipment and components to manufacture recommendation, i.e. valves, motors, belts, bearings, filters, and lubrication etc.
• Installs, rebuilds, and replaces fans, motors, VFDs, thermostats, fuses, filters, bearings, valves, controls, gaskets, and other equipment as necessary.
• Manages the boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and HVAC units through a centralized building automation system (Metasys).
• Monitors and treats the open/closed water loop systems by utilizing test kits and adding necessary chemicals.
• Calibrates electrical and pneumatic control devices.
• Repairs refrigeration units and their components such as condensing units, drain lines, fan motors, etc.
• Conducts regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, pumps, heating/ ventilating units, and makes necessary adjustments. This includes tasks such as replacing filters, lubricating motor bearings, inspecting belts, refilling refrigerant, and cleaning coils.
• Performs diagnostic assessments of assets to identify the root cause of malfunctions or performance issues and completes necessary repairs based upon findings.
• Documents all work and assets in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
• Verifies completed work for conformance with requirements of all applicable building standards/codes.
• Inspects work performed by contractors to ensure work is completed per specifications and building code requirements.
• Identifies and corrects unsafe working conditions with management oversight.
• Cleans, maintains, and services various tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.
• Follows maintenance and repair procedures including preventative and corrective maintenance.
• Attends training programs (classroom and virtual) as designated.
• Complies with all Corporation safety and risk management policies and procedures.
• Reports all accidents and injuries in a timely manner.
• Participates in regular safety meetings, safety training, and hazard assessments.
• Applies all applicable OSHA and related local safety requirements to all assigned work.
• Reviews inventory to ensure adequate stock of common items and identifies items for purchase.
• Maintains a safe and clean work environment.
• May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

SUPERVISORY
While there are no direct reports to this position, this position may provide guidance to various staff and other personnel as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or GED equivalent plus successful completion of a craft apprenticeship program or on the job training program providing journeyperson level experience; and three years related journeyperson level experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret building drawings, specifications, shop drawings, schematics, manufacturer’s specifications, electrical studies, and other reference material. Ability to read and understand various construction/maintenance contracts, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to effectively, with professionalism and courtesy, discuss technical information and respond to questions from individuals or groups of employees, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of numerical representation, including whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of technically diverse instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to apply logical thinking to identify and explain problems, collect data, establish facts, and create a valid conclusion or resolution to problems.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must have a valid California driver’s license (non-resident students and military must have a valid driver’s license from their U.S. state of residency).

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Possesses effective communication and teamwork skills to adapt to changing circumstances. Able to problem solve and negotiate to achieve best results using critical thinking and analytical skills. Knowledge of building automation and refrigeration systems preferred.

The employee is occasionally required to be stationary. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee must be aware of and use proper personal protection equipment (PPE) necessary to safely complete the assigned task. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; confined spaces; and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Ability to work a split shift (Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday) to provide appropriate support and interaction to employees and other internal departments. The San Diego Convention Center is a 24/7 operation; therefore, hours and days outside of the standard work schedule may be required.
