The Position:
The San Diego Community College District is accepting applications for an Associate Professor, DSPS, 100%, 10-month assignment.
The current vacancy exists at San Diego College of Continuing Education and applicants should understand that they may be assigned to any Continuing Education campus.
Assignment may include day, evening, weekend hours, and/or off-campus responsibilities. Selected candidate must be willing to adjust work days/hours based on the department's needs. (This may be a split assignment between several campuses.)
In addition, applications accepted for this position may be considered for identical vacancies that occur throughout Continuing Education during the current academic year. Continuing Education campuses offer adults the opportunity to renew their learning experiences through noncredit vocational, basic skills, life skills and enrichment classes throughout the city of San Diego.
Major Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Dean of DSPS, the Professor serves as the DSPS instructional leader and will perform specific leadership responsibilities as they relate to classroom and non-classroom assignments, professional development and other educational duties. The assignment includes:
Classroom activities
  • Teach DSPS courses as assigned in accordance with approved course outlines.
  • Develop curriculum.
  • Participate in curriculum and program review.
  • Evaluate student progress to meet accountability standards.
  • Establish effective working relationships with students of diverse ethic, disability and cultural backgrounds.
  • Use technology to deliver instruction and to prepare instructional materials.
  • Supervise classroom support staff.
Non-Classroom activities
  • Serve as the faculty leader for DSPS.
  • Design, provide, and support faculty and staff development activities.
  • Participate in activities to improve articulation between programs within the District and with the business community and community based organizations.
  • Research, recommend, and coordinate purchase of instructional equipment and materials.
  • Serve as a mentor to other faculty members within DSPS.
  • Take initiative in developing new methods of promoting instructional excellence and academic achievement.
  • Assist in planning and organizing program activities.
  • Serve on shared governance committees (e.g., hiring, matriculation, Academic Senate).
  • Recruit new instructors and support staff.
  • Participate as a peer evaluator.
  • Participate in professional development activities on a regular basis.
  • Assist in seeking and securing outside funding sources.
Qualifications:
Applicants for this position must show evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
  • Masters degree in rehabilitation counseling;
    OR
  • Masters degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling; OR
  • Bachelors degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:
    • (A) Counseling for students with disabilities; or
    • (B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent; OR
  • California Community College Disabled Student Programs and Services Instructor and Service Credential (valid for life); OR,
  • The equivalent.

  • SDCCD history and mission.
  • Students rights and teachers contracts.
  • Technical aspects of field of specialty.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Analyze a situation correctly and adopt effective course of action.
  • Communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Establish effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the business community.
  • Interpret, apply, and explain regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Plan and organize the programs and activities assigned.
  • Training and Experience:
  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: a Bachelors degree in an appropriate subject area and at least two years experience in teaching, counseling, research or administration preferably in an institution of higher education; some contract instructor positions may require experience in the specific program being served.
License/Credential:
  • Appropriate teaching credential from the State of California.
Licenses:
Pay Information:
Class 0, Step A - Class 6, Step C ($5,740.38- $8,128.98) per month based on the current AFT - Continuing Education Faculty Salary Schedule.
Initial salary placement for this Adult Instructor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 - Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Adult Instructors earn tenure after 4 years.
