SUMMARY

The School Therapist provides the student educational counseling by planning and implementing his/her immediate and long-range educational program; social/emotional counseling by helping him/her develop his/her ability to function in social and personal responsibility; and counseling to the student’s parents and consultation with staff members on the student’s learning and development.

ESSENTIAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist students in identifying and solving emotional and educational problems, assisting with schoolwork, adjusting to school & community life, and supporting progress towards their IEP goals.
  • Cooperate or lead in case management as appropriate to individual case plans.
  • Obtain and evaluate student data, including test results, psycho-educational assessments, personal histories, school records, teachers' reports, parental information, and probation reports.
  • Maintain a close liaison with school district personnel in the implementation of educational programs best suited to high risk youth, so that they might be more successful upon transition when appropriate to regular school settings.
  • Provide consultation related to educational mandates and legislation.
  • Provide individual, group, and parent counseling to students and parents/caregivers including psycho-educational and therapy process groups depending on need and as stated in the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Work in collaboration with teachers and staff to develop appropriate Behavioral Intervention Plans for identified students.
  • Provide training to school staff as it relates to mental health and therapeutic services.
  • Develop, support, and implement positive pro-social activities and transition and independent living skills curriculum to increase student’s healthy interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships.
  • Support NPS staff and teachers in problem-solving classroom needs in accordance with current legislation.
  • Attend weekly staff and classroom team meetings.
  • Implement and facilitate the NPS positive behavioral support program(s), by collaborating with administration and staff.
  • Co-facilitate and plan scheduled parent support groups and/or parenting education classes.
  • Facilitate and lead special projects for school year
  • Ongoing consultation with outside service providers (mental health professionals, psychiatrists, wraparound services, etc) including collaboration with center service providers.
  • Co-facilitate and manage Student groups with meetings and responsibilities.
  • Participate in one SDCC (Center-wide) committee.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to run, walk, sit and drive a vehicle. The employee must be able to move and/or lift a student when clinically necessary, and must be able to follow a student that AWOLs in a walking or running pace. Applying SPA restraint techniques can involve lifting the student, holding the student down in a standing, sitting or ground level manner, as well separating clients who are acting in an unsafe manner to ensure the safety for the clients and staff. Due to the emotional instability of the clients the employee may be subjected to kicking, hitting, punching, biting, hair pulling, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Qualifications


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid California Driver’s License (DL) and acceptable driving record
  • Master’s degree from an accredited university
  • Must be a registered intern in social work (ASW), psychology (Ph.D.), marriage and family therapy (AMFT), professional clinical counselor (APCC), school counseling (PPS)
  • Minimum of one year experience and or knowledge of students with special needs in multi-cultural awareness

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR)
  • Licensed MFT; LPCC, PPS, or LCSW
  • Safe and Positive Approaches (SPA)
  • Standard First Aid
  • Ability to supervise graduate trainees
