Job Title: Dentist

Reports to: Dental Director

SDAIHC is looking for a team oriented dentist to work Mondays, Friday and Saturdays.

Dentist Job Description:

The San Diego American Indian Health Center (SDAIHC) is a patient-centered health home that provides comprehensive medical, dental, behavioral health, and community wellness services that are available to all San Diegans. Founded in May 1979, we honor the wisdom of community leaders who believed urban American Indians living in our city should have community-based health care rooted in traditional cultural values. The Position

The Dentist works under the general direction of the Dental Director. As an employee of SDAIHC the general dentist diagnoses and treats diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth, gums and related oral structures.

The qualified candidate drives results by:

1) Maintaining a professional relationship and positive attitude with co-workers, the public, patients and all SDAIHC staff, Board of Directors and vendors

2) Maintaining the highest professional ethics and is honest in dealing with people; is a model for all employees through his/her actions

3) Striving to learn more and is receptive to learning different ways of doing things

4) Displaying enthusiasm toward the work and the mission of San Diego American Indian Health Center

5) Demonstrating clear knowledge of SDAIHC clinic structure, standards, procedures and protocols

 Essential Functions

  1. Diagnosis and treatment planning.
  2. Medical health history review.
  3. Oral prophylaxis.
  4. Non-Surgical Periodontics.
  5. Health promotion/disease prevention and education.
  6. Emergency care (as defined in the Policy & Procedure manual under “Dental Emergencies”).
  7. Restorative and cosmetic dental procedures.
  8. Oral Prosthetics.
  9. Oral Surgery.
  10. Endodontics.
  11. Referrals for specialty care as required.
  12. Referrals to other health center departments as necessary.
  13. Responsible for the submission of all monthly paperwork and reports to the Dental Director.
  14. Maintain all licensure requirements needed to perform these duties, including maintaining CEUs.
  15. Attend monthly staff meetings and mandatory trainings or obtain trainings at a later date if unable to attend.
  16. Maintain and follow all Safety and Infection Control guidelines set forth by SDAIHC.
  17. Effectively utilize auxiliaries through open communication and dialogue.
  18. Other duties assigned by the Dental Director as required.

Education/Experience

Degree in dentistry: Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) required.

Knowledge/Skills

Language Skills: Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Able to write routine reports and correspondence. Able to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills: Able to perform basic mathematical calculations necessary to perform the job function.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of electronic health and dental record software, database software, internet software, Microsoft Office applications.

Reasoning Ability: Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions related to the dental field.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Current California licensure to practice dentistry; Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified; current Registration number from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA); no disciplinary action imposed by the California Dentistry Board within the last five years. Must possess a current/valid Department of Motor Vehicle California driver license with a satisfactory driving record and auto insurance. Must inform management of any change to license and registrations as soon as possible.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job with or without accommodation.

  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force to frequently lift, carry, push, pull objects, including bodily motion
  • Moving on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly from one work site to another
  • Standing for sustained periods of time
  • Substantial movements of the wrists, hands and or/fingers to operate dental equipment such dental handpieces, air/water syringes, ultrasonic scalers, opening/closing cassettes, performing 4 –handed dentistry, operating computers and other office equipment such as telephones and printers
  • Occasionally ascend/descend stairs to access different departments
