Student and Family Advocate (Title VI American Indian Program) 

2 (Two) Vacancies 

Hourly Non – Contract
FTE: .7375 (29.5/hrs per week)
Anticipated Start: 01/18/2022

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
This position is not benefits eligible
Starting wage: $12.50 per hour (86-C)

Note: This position is contingent upon available funding (Title VI federal grant funding).

Purpose Statement
The job of Student and Family Advocate (American Indian program) is to support American Indian/Alaskan Native students and families to access community and District resources; provide information on services available to eligible students and families about education under Title VI provisions; convey information regarding school and/or district activities and procedures; develop relationships and resources to help families, and/or refer families to other agencies.

This job reports to the Executive Director of Educational Equity and Student Support.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Pass a fingerprint and criminal Background check, including on-going
  2. High school diploma or equivalent
  1. Able to work with limited supervision
  2. Professional workplace etiquette and represent the school/department in a professional manner
  3. Communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and positive working relationships with co-workers, students, parents and other district employees
  4. Speak, read, write, analyze, and follow written and verbal communication in English; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing 

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Job related experience (e.g. experience working with student groups, community support agencies, community participation and involvement, etc.)
  2. Strong interpersonal skills
  3. Experience with Microsoft Office tools, such Word, Excel, and use of data-based software
  4. Experience in a K-12 education or public employment environment

 Essential Functions 

  1. Establishes positive individual relationships with American Indian/Alaskan Native students.
  2. Regularly visits elementary and secondary schools to mentor and advocate for American Indian/Alaskan Native students based on needs, interests and goals.
  3. Regularly visits elementary and secondary schools to confer with teachers, counselors, and other school personnel regarding the academic progress and academic needs of American Indian/Alaskan Native students.
  4. Develops relationships and resources within the community for the purpose of providing needed assistance to eligible families and students.
  5. Promotes family involvement and provides tools to families for the purpose of improving children's academic, social-emotional, and behavioral success.
  6. Participates in various meetings and trainings for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information.
  7. Prepares written materials (e.g. correspondence, memos, reports, data, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
  8. Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic lists and records.

Other Functions

  1. Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
  2. Assists students and families to access community and District resources (e.g. clothing, food, holiday assistance, medical insurance, etc.) for the purpose of helping families meet basic needs. 

Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and some fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
