The Director Adult Emergency Services will:

  • Supervise the delivery of patient care on a group of assigned units according to the philosophy of Saint Peter’s University Hospital and the philosophy, goals and objectives of the Nursing Division.
  • In collaboration with the Nurse managers, assess the number and level of personnel needed to deliver the level of patient care needed.
  • Ensure that appropriate information is communicated to the oncoming supervisor. This shift report shall include (but not be limited to) the following: individual report on select patients (critical, new admissions, etc.) overall status of each unit, incidents, overview of staffing.
  • Provide input for the development of Standards of Practice, Patient Care Standards and Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure that Standards of Practice, Patient Care Standards and policies and procedures are followed.
  • Communicate and interpret policies to staff, patients and physicians.
  • Provide input to the Vice President of Patient Care Services for the development of the philosophy of the department of the goals and objectives of the Nursing Department.
  • Acts as a consultant, lend clinical expertise and intervenes as necessary in the assessment and performance of patient care.
  • Confers daily with the Nurse Managers regarding the operation of assigned unit(s).
  • Promote/establish effective communication between nursing, other Hospital departments and members of the medical staff.
  • Ensure the timely completion of evaluations of staff. Ensure appropriate follow-up based on completed evaluations.
  • Evaluate the performance of Nurse Manager and provides ongoing mentoring and coaching as necessary.
  • Promote open communication between nursing administration and nursing staff. Provides ongoing feedback to the Vice President.
  • Report pertinent information regarding patient care problems, personnel problems, progress in pilot projects and nay unusual occurrences to the Vice President.
  • Attend assigned and impromptu meetings with related Hospital departments.
  • Chair specific nursing committees and provides follow-up date. Reports to the Nursing Executive Committee the activities of committees.
  • Present to Vice President for approval, a budget which will allow for adequate personnel, facilities, equipment and supplies for the fiscal year. Implement budget after final approval from Administration.
  • Account for budgetary variances on a monthly basis.
  • Recommend, initiate or approve requisition of equipment and supplies.
  • Continually try to contain cost by educating personnel in proper utilization of equipment and supplies.
  • Promote a positive attitude towards the responsibility of adhering to safety standards.
  • Promote appropriate responses in a fire, disaster and/or environmental hazard.
  • Report incidents promptly, initiate investigative and corrective action and recommend solutions.
  • Assist the clinical instructor in arranging for clinical experience for students.
  • Initiate, participate in personnel actions, conferring with Vice President concerning promotion, transfer and disciplinary action.
  • Participate in the recruitment programs as assigned by the Vice President of Patient Care Services. Interviews applicants for Nurse Manager positions. Participates in other interviewing as needed.
  • Resolve employee grievances in accordance with established policy, or if necessary, refers them to the appropriate authority.
  • Promote the opportunity for nursing staff to attend and participate in continuing education and research programs.
  • Initiate, support and participate in research to improve patient care.
  • Participate as a resource person for allied community health services.
  • Recognize the need for personal and professional growth. Attends conferences, seminars, utilizes reference materials.
  • Work with the evening and night supervisors to ensure smooth operation of the Nursing Service Department.
  • Work with the Director of PI and Quality to ensure ongoing monitoring of the quality of care.
  • Assume responsibility for Nursing Service activities in the absence of the Vice President.
  • Perform related and other departmental duties, as requested.
  • Work with the Director of Professional Practice to ensure that Magnet standards are being met and that practice within their areas of responsibility are evidence based.

Requirements:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited program of professional nursing.
  • Must possess current license as a Registered Nurse from Board of Nursing within the State of New Jersey.
  • Must have a M.S.N or equivalent.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years nursing experience including progressive leadership in an acute care facility.
  • Must possess advanced management skills and sound knowledge of the healthcare delivery system.
  • Must possess high level of interpersonal skills to resolve complex problems requiring innovative solutions and the ability to negotiate in sensitive situations.
  • Exceptionally demanding mentally, requiring high level of concentration in order to make appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to cope with varies stress related to the nature of the position.
