Responsibilities
Saint Mary's College invites applications for a part-time hourly Assistant Coach position to assist with all aspects of NCAA Division I Women's Tennis program, including compliance with NCAA and College rules and regulations, program administration, student recruitment, and on-court coaching. The College sponsors fourteen (14) intercollegiate sports programs for men and women and is a member of the NCAA Division I and the West Coast Conference (WCC).
  • Reporting to the Head Coach of Women's Tennis, the Assistant Coach is expected to teach the necessary skills from safety practices, the basic fundamentals, to on-court techniques and strategies and in planning and conducting daily practices and/or conditioning sessions; including various individual sessions of technique and fundamental work.
  • Promote and foster a positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship by team members, including physical and mental well being of all program participants.
  • Assist with supporting and monitoring the academic performance of team members, including graduation from the College.
  • Support, monitor, and evaluate the academic performance of the student-athletes participating in their sport program.
  • Familiarity with and use the academic support referral system to assist student-athletes as needed with their academic success.
  • Responsible for the conduct of team members both on and off the court. Assist in organizing practices, including physical and technical training.
  • Assist with evaluating, recruiting and selecting qualified prospects that have the ability to compete in the classroom and athletically.
  • Actively seek out and encourage a diverse group of prospects and assist them through the application process.
  • Work collaboratively with the Assistant Director of Athletics for Student Support Services and the Admissions Office Staff to qualify and process prospects in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Make recurring contacts by telephone, written correspondence, off-campus visits and evaluations, and coordination of campus visits as assigned by the Head Coach; including scouting and promoting the Women's tennis program to prospective student-athletes.
  • Promote various clinics and camps aimed at the local youth Women's Tennis programs.
  • Participate in activities that strengthen the relationship between the College and the community, including alumni events, fund raising, promotional events, and other college and community events; communicate with parents, alumni, and community in order to promote a stronger relationship with the program.
  • Assist the Head Coach in scheduling of contests and opponents, including all aspects of game management, arranging for the contests, planning and coordinating team travel arrangements, maintaining inventory of and caring for all athletic equipment and apparel, planning and conducting practices, preparing facilities, compiling physician testing data and game and practice statistics. Supervise student-athletes in physical conditioning, weight lifting, individual practice sessions, physical testing, and practice and game videotape analysis.
  • Maintain collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with members of the media, donors, and other individuals interested in the Women's tennis program.
  • Know, recognize, and comply with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the College and its employees, and the rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (including, but not limited to, NCAA Bylaw, Article 11 and its requirement to report all athletically-related income and benefits from sources outside of the College to the President) and of the West Coast Conference as now constituted or as may be amended in the future. Immediately advise the Director of Athletics and Recreational Sports if you have reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees or students, have occurred or will occur.
  • Works in a highly collaborative and culturally diverse environment and develops effective collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in Athletics & Recreational Sports.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the mission of the College, which is informed, animated and expressed through its Catholic, Lasallian and Liberal Arts traditions.
Experience and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree highly desirable and a minimum of two (2) - three (3) years prior experience playing and/or coaching experience at the College or University level or in similar setting.
  • Proficiency with Windows operating systems, including word-processing software and database management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to effectively communicate with a diverse community of students, faculty, coaches, administrators, and staff.
  • Ability to represent the Department and the College to off-campus constituencies, including alumni, friends, corporate partners, and donors.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to handle multiple, competing tasks, and priorities.
  • Team-oriented individual with ability to take initiative.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with all members of a culturally diverse campus community; ability to cultivate and maintain partnerships with diverse individuals, offices and programs
  • Understanding of and commitment to further the College's mission.
