Saint Joseph's College of Maine is hiring for the full-time position of Learning Designer!

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Learning Designer supports the Technology-Enhanced Instruction department by supporting faculty in the design of quality learning experiences, ensuring effective instructional design while safeguarding alignment, promoting student engagement and achievement, and collaborating with members of the Technology-Enhanced Instruction department and faculty.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Proactively building and fostering relationships with faculty to support a work environment conducive to sharing ideas and providing feedback (and adherence to timelines)
  • Assisting with the design/redesign of content/materials for multiple modalities (e.g., blended, flipped, etc.)
  • Fostering the development of technologically and pedagogically- sound content/materials in a variety of formats
  • Applying Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to the design and development of content/materials
  • Exercising independent judgment and discretion in relation to the quality of content/materials
  • Ensuring content/materials comply with the ADA, meet web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG), and do not violate copyright law
  • Evaluating content/materials against SJC quality standards
  • Employing adult learning theories, UDL principles, and instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE, Gagne’s 9 Events, etc.)
  • Adhering to standards outlined in the QM rubric or OLC scorecard
  • Revising or rewriting outcomes, as appropriate, to accurately convey what learners should be able to do (i.e., after completing the lesson, unit, or course) and the lower/higher-order thinking skills required
  • Using student feedback as well as current research, trends, and advancements in instructional design and educational technology to make recommendations for improvements
  • Working with faculty to develop multi-modal content/materials, vary assessments, and curate relevant third-party content (e.g., e-texts, OpenCourseWare, podcasts, etc.)
  • Supporting the course development process (and/or other development functions)
  • Creating documentation and developing resources and/or training for faculty/staff of differing experience/skill levels
  • Assessing third-party content (e.g., e-texts, OpenCourseWare, podcasts, etc.) for alignment, compliance, and integration
  • Assisting with periodic upgrades to the learning management system (LMS) and/or modifications to the layout and navigation of courses, as needed
  • Sharing current research and trends in instructional design and educational technology

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s Degree in Instructional Design or a related field
  • Experience in classroom and online instruction in Higher Education required
  • Three to five years working in Instructional Design preferred
  • Graphic and web design skills preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Ability to explain technological concepts in terms that faculty/staff of differing levels of skill can easily understand
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities with deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to generate graphics or visuals that incorporate data, tell stories, and employ elements and principles of design
  • Excellent proofreading and editing skills
  • Ability to navigate learning management systems with ease
  • Generate original content/materials using computer software such as H5P, Photoshop, Storyline, Voicethread
  • Strong knowledge of css and html
