Lead Safety Advisor (Power & Utilities) 

Summary: The Lead Advisor provides support to the Director, Vice President, and leadership to SMG Team Members and service delivery for SMG clients. The Lead Advisor position will provide leadership for all aspects of the Contractor Safety Management Program within assigned area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: 

Provide safety services to and on behalf of our clients. 

  • Manage the regional safety advisor team to provide effective and efficient execution of the client CSMP across the region including strategy setting, team development, and meeting overall team objectives. Allocates resources to ensure that an appropriate level of service/performance is provided. 
  • Work cross-functionally and cross-culturally with other regional Lead Advisors, client representatives, stakeholders, and peers to identify program improvements and provide solutions to enhance the client contractor safety management program. 
  • Present contractor safety statistics, trends, and planned interventions to the regional safety and health, construction management, and project management teams. 
  • Facilitates weekly meeting (“scrum”) with all team members and client representatives to maintain effective communication with the discussion focused on teamwork, open incidents, contractor, or client issues.
  • Ensures SMG staff is well trained and effective through continuous development, motivation, and mentoring. Review and approve staff member’s requests to utilize training budget.
  • Coordinate project site coverage during periods of absence. 
  • The Lead Advisor will demonstrate to client efforts being undertaken in leading the safety program, and progress made on client-driven initiatives and ICP goals.
  • Attendance at pre-bid, PSEM, pre-construction or contractor meetings as requested. The Lead Advisor will provide leadership, insight, and recommendations for improvement from a safety perspective.
  • Meet with client safety, construction management, project managers and contractor representatives as scheduled.
  • Attend and participate in all incident review meetings and/or conference calls for events that occurred in their territory as necessary. 
  • Orientate new Associates and assign mentors to new Associates for coaching on routine job functions and to assist with onboarding (i.e., “Green Ambassador”).
  • Participate in monthly and quarterly Account Leadership Meetings. 
  • Develop technical material or delegate to Associates for development and provide input on Quarterly Staff Meetings.
  • Seek feedback from client key stakeholders on Safety Advisor performance and abilities. 
  • Conduct jobsite observation reports with Safety Advisors from the various regions within their footprint on a regular basis to promote a consistent and united CORE Visit approach.
  • Lead third party incident investigations as requested and be actively engaged in the incident review process. 
  • Evaluate Safety Advisor relationships with contractor field personnel and contractor safety representatives, understanding a team effort is paramount to a safe project.

Management of Team Members 

  • Review and approve employee performance management plans (PM’s) per company policy to ensure employees are on target with their respective personal and company goals.
  • Perform quarterly Paylocity check-ins with team members. 
  • Monitors progress to ensure client specifications are incorporated and timelines are followed. Offers direction and suggestions for strategic solutions for client projects.
  • Creates and fosters positive client relationships.
  • Address feedback received from client on a team member, recognition for positive feedback, improvement plan for negative feedback. Provides feedback and offers creative solutions and suggestions to Team personnel. 
  • A strong cultural fit with exceptional leadership skills.
  • Monitor team to make sure work is being performed efficiently with each member being fully utilized.
  • Make sure team members are completing their client and company required training plans within the assigned due dates.
  • Verify team members have appropriate coverage in place for scheduled PTO and sick time.
  • Lead routine team meetings: create presentation with SMG and account updates. 
  • Provides or coordinates training for area staff as necessary. Review Training Requests Forms and approve or decline based on handbook requirements. 
  • Lead and/or participate in internal and client formed committees (e.g., Driver Safety Team, SIF program, etc.). being the leader in a specific domain. 
  • Champion client and internal initiatives geared towards Customer Value and Operational Excellence (development of training modules, job aids, safety alerts, etc.).
  • Researches and resolves problems and questions or properly refers them. 
  • Supports the Director with initiative implementation and training.
  • Conducts interviews and assists with hiring personnel as needed. 

Requirements

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree, EHS-related certifications required (e.g., CSP, CHST, CUSP), Subject Matter Expert (SME), philanthropy work, leadership education, active member in an association; ten plus years related experience and/or training required.

Physical Demands of the job may include: Moving about long distances; Ascending and descending stairs and ladders; Remaining in a stationary position for a prolonged period; Working in extreme weather; Being exposed to loud noises; Wearing personal protective gear correctly when required, Operating a Motor Vehicle, Operating an All-Terrain Vehicle.
