In 1955, 15 civilian employees at Shaw Air Force base in Sumter, South Carolina pooled their money to charter SAFE Federal Credit Union. Since then, SAFE has grown to over 120,000 members and just over $1 billion in assets. SAFE is the largest Midlands based credit union with 17 branches in eight counties in South Carolina.
