JOB SUMMARY:

The General Mechanic is responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing equipment, and must have a developed understanding of components, schematics, and service literature. The General Mechanic ensures the safe and efficient operation of equipment through troubleshooting abilities and a thorough understanding of the equipment. Strong welding skills, fabricating skills, and an ability to prepare detailed repair orders upon completing maintenance assignments are preferred for this position.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • May assists in training personnel as needed or directed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Vehicle/Equipment Inspections: Thoroughly examine Vehicles/Equipment for safety and compliance. Inspections include examining all vital parts of the equipment, machinery, and vehicles to ensure there are no issues or potential problems.
  2. Repair and Maintenance: Perform repairs and routine maintenance to keep equipment, machines, and vehicles in good condition.
  3. Diagnosis and Troubleshooting: Use various tools, equipment, and expertise to identify and fix mechanical and electrical issues in equipment, machines, and vehicles.
  4. Engine and Drive Train Work: Handle repairs and maintenance related to engines and drive trains by diagnosing problems, replacing worn-out components, and fixing leaks, among other tasks.
  5. Brake Work: Inspect, replace, and repair braking systems for safety and efficiency.
  6. Electrical Work: Diagnose and repair electrical systems and components using specialized tools and diagnostic equipment.
  7. Suspension and Steering: Maintain and fix suspension and steering components for stability.
  8. Hydraulics: Work on hydraulic systems in specific vehicles and machinery, which involves dealing with fluids under high pressure.
  9. Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with safety standards in all tasks.
  10. Facility Maintenance: Perform general facility repairs and preventative maintenance related to Construction, Plumbing, A/C, Electrical, HVAC, Concrete, Masonry, Paving, Siding, Roofing and Excavation.

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform repairs in maintenance shop environment.
  • Perform repairs in field/roadside environment.
  • Interact with internal customers in a helpful & professional manner.
  • Perform quality repairs.
  • Ability to fill positions and perform other duties as needed.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of FMCSA vehicle standards AND/OR mobile and stationary equipment standards.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to understand instructions, applicable safety regulations, and to maintain records.
  • Ability to interact professionally with internal customers, team members, and management.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to compile information and make decisions.
  • Ability to complete safety awareness training.
  • Ability to handle equipment and vehicles safely and sensibly.
  • Ability to follow instructions from supervisors or senior maintenance workers.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to listen, understand, and follow directions.
  • Mechanically inclined with great problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems.
  • Thorough understanding of the product and/or process being inspected.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE/TRAINING

  • One to three years of related experience.
    • Required
  • Three to five years of related experience.
    • Preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Required
  • Associate’s degree or vocational training in heavy truck, mobile, and stationary equipment maintenance, or related field
    • Preferred, not required
  • Valid state motor vehicle operator’s license.
    • Required
  • Valid Class A Commercial Motor Vehicle License
    • Preferred, not required
  • Satisfactorily pass forklift driving training program or demonstrate safe handling of forklift in an on-site test.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Lifting Options

  • Must be able to lift, carry and move up to 50 pounds at a time.

Body Options

  • Able to complete physically demanding work.
  • Good hand-eye-foot coordination and sense of balance.
  • Able to kneel, crouch, or crawl in awkward spaces to repair equipment.
  • Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the entire body. This will include climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, carrying, and stooping.
  • Able to bend, stretch, push, pull, and move as needed to reach, clean, and service machinery.
  • Must be able to traverse facilities and machinery by climbing, balancing, lifting, walking, stooping, and carrying materials.
  • Prolonged periods standing.
  • Must be able to work on components that are vertical, flat, or overhead.
  • If CDL holder, must be able to meet DOT physical requirements.

Visual & Audio Options

  • Must be able to visually inspect machines.
  • Excellent depth perception and reaction time.
  • Visual acuity to follow hand signals, maintain logs, and inspect and maintain machinery.
  • Must be able to see details at close range.
  • Must be able to wear protective equipment for eye/ear.

Dexterity & Acuity Options

  • Manual dexterity as needed to operate a variety of machinery and equipment.
  • Must have enough manual dexterity and stability as required for precision work.
  • Ability to maintain single-task focus and situational awareness.

Weather Related Options

  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and tolerate exposure to typical noises and smells associated with the plant.
  • May work in a variety of weather including extreme heat and cold.
