This is an entry level position, working in SMUD's fleet garage. This position will be resposible for various activities supporting fleet, such as fueling, washing, vehicle delivery and more.

This position will be required to work afternoons and evenings.

The intent of this job posting is to fill a current Full-Time position and establish an eligibility list which may be used to fill current and future, permanent and limited-term, vacancies for up to two (2) years.

You must clearly demonstrate, on your resume, that you possess the knowledge, skills and experience required in the minimum qualifications listed in this posting.

Purpose

Under general supervision, provides vehicle fueling and / or cleaning services; provides assistance to Vehicle Attendants, Vehicle Mechanics and Vehicle Parts Clerks at all SMUD locations.

Nature and Scope

This is an entry-level classification responsible for performing non-technical duties that are required to maintain SMUD's vehicle fleet.

Incumbents may be required to obtain and maintain a California Class A license with hazardous materials / tanker endorsements.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drives and operates SMUD's mobile fuel truck, and fuels SMUD vehicles and equipment with mobile and stationary fueling equipment.
  • Adds diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to vehicles as needed.
  • Checks oil and other fluid levels in SMUD vehicles and equipment.
  • Drives operable vehicles and equipment requiring maintenance, servicing, or repair.
  • Picks up and delivers parts and materials as required.
  • Cuts keys.
  • Assists with in-servicing and decommissioning vehicles / equipment.
  • Takes and records bulk fuel / oil tank readings.
  • Cleans shop area, wash rack, battery room, and lube room.
  • Stands fire watch during cutting / welding operations.
  • Assists Vehicle Mechanics with installation / alignment of winch lines, brake bleeding operations and other duties where a second person may be required to do the job safely and efficiently.
  • Assists with lifting heavy parts or tires.
  • Obtains certification for and uses a forklift to load / unload parts deliveries and to move materials around the shop as needed.
  • Obtains certification for and uses a tow tractor to move trailers and disabled vehicles.
  • Cleans the inside and outside of SMUD vehicles and equipment with mobile and stationary cleaning equipment.
  • Performs limited non-mechanical services on automotive vehicles as needed.

Required Education

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Required Experience Qualifications

Minimum of six months experience in semi-skilled work in an equipment repair shop or automotive garage working with hand and / or power tools;

or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge Of

Basic math, written and oral communication skills, basic computer and software skills, and safe working procedures. Knowledge of automotive equipment, including the fuels, lubricants, and standard tools and equipment commonly used in the repair and maintenance of vehicles.

Skills To

Record vehicle mileage, fuel, and oil usage on required forms; understand and follow oral and written instructions; work in all weather conditions.

Always work safely and comprehend and adhere to material safety precautions and operational training. Work cooperatively as a team member, complete tasks on one's own, and learn new skills.

Required Licenses / Certificates

Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record (not more than two moving violations in the last two years).

Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's license with hazardous materials and tanker endorsements within six (6) months of hire.

Individuals appointed to positions requiring the possession / retention of a Class A CDL must undergo an initial drug and alcohol screening and submit to random drug and alcohol screenings as required by the U.

S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

Desirable Qualifications

  • California Class A Commercial Driver's License with hazardous materials and tanker endorsements
  • Standard Forklift Certification
  • Knowledge of automotive components and repair procedures
