Range A: $6,391.02 - $7,769.08 / month
Range B: $6,712.92 - $8,160.60 / month
Two salary levels are established for the class of Special Assistant, Board of Supervisors. Initial appointments maybe made at either Range "A" or Range "B", whichever is deemed most appropriate by the appointing authority, based on the appointee's personal qualifications, level of independence/supervision under which the assigned duties are performed, and the relative difficulty of the duties of the position compared to those of the other positions in the class.
Under general direction, Special Assistant Board of Supervisors independently perform a variety of legislative and administrative duties and/or special projects and program assignments for a member of the Board of Supervisors.

Examples of Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of

  • Legislative processes and analysis with emphasis on local government
  • Principles and procedures of public administration, management, accounting, and budget preparation and control
  • Relationships among local, State and federal governments, public interest groups and private enterprise
  • Legislative processes of county, state and federal governments
  • Structures and functions of county governments
  • Methods and techniques involved in conducting studies of administrative and management practices, methods, and procedures; including statistical research methodologies
  • Interviewing and public speaking techniques
  • Contract negotiations, preparation and monitoring
Ability to
  • Research, analyze, and make recommendations on complex issues and administrative management and procedural practices
  • Read and interpret applicable codes, ordinances, laws, regulations and policies
  • Prepare logical and comprehensive reports, summaries, abstracts and other documentation

Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
One year of paid or volunteer experience performing administrative, public liaison and/or analytical duties for governmental/public agencies and/or community-based organizations which required knowledge and abilities in the areas of government legislative processes, local government functions, and/or media and public relations. Governmental experience in administrative support services is preferable although experience in private enterprise may contain some of the necessary background.
Note: If the word "experience" is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.
Special Requirements
Driver's License: Possessing a valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, is required for some positions. Incumbents must possess the required license within 90 days of appointment. Failure to obtain and maintain the appropriate license may constitute cause for disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal from the class under applicable Civil Service Rules.
Working Conditions: Incumbents in this class may be required to work evenings and weekends.
Probationary Period
The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.

FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)
All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut-off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.
This examination will evaluate the relevance, level, recency, progression and quality of candidate's education, training and experience. The candidate's application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore, the candidate's responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough, detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.
All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their governmentjobs.com inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination.
