Under general supervision, assembles, installs, maintains, repairs, tests and operates various types of complex electronic equipment and systems used within County facilities, emergency equipment and/or motor vehicles.

Examples of Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of

  • Principles of electronic theory and circuitry
  • Principles of low voltage wiring systems, including automotive wiring
  • Inventory and records management principles
  • Practices and tools related to disassembling and reassembling of interior automotive parts and components
  • Principles underlying the installation and use of a wide variety of electronic systems and equipment in a high security environment
  • Access control, intercom, paging, closed circuit television and electronic alarm systems; telemetry and wire and fiber optic carrier equipment
  • Data circuit protocols and installation requirements
  • Electronic high and low voltage circuits
  • Methods, practices and tools used in maintaining, repairing, testing and adjusting a variety of electronic systems and equipment
  • Safety practices necessary for work in electronics and electrical systems and power equipment
Ability to
  • Read plans, specifications, blue prints and schematics, and make rough drawings and sketches
  • Track equipment performance to ensure compliance with equipment specifications
  • Analyze, determine problems and repair electronic systems and equipment
  • Identify and use hand and power tools; soldering equipment; cutting, crimping and splicing tools; and various electronic test equipment and instruments; make minor repairs to equipment
  • Communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Maintain records, present data and prepare reports
  • Use a personal computer
  • Work independently and make routine decisions
  • Follow detailed verbal and written instructions in the installation/removal and repair of electronic equipment
  • Read and comprehend technical manuals, troubleshooting guides, manufactures’ specifications, warranties, parts catalogs, and work orders
  • Explain technical information in layman’s terms to service users and other personnel in order to answer questions and provide information about equipment and equipment operation

Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Three (3) years paid experience within the last four (4) years in the installation, maintenance, testing and repair of electronic equipment and systems.
Note: Successful completion of coursework from an accredited trade school, college or university in Electronics Technology, Computer Integrated Electronics, Communications Technology, or other field closely related to the knowledge and abilities of the class may be substituted for a maximum of two years experience on the basis of 30 semester (or 45 quarter) units being equivalent to one year of experience.
Note: If the word “experience” is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

General Qualifications
Physical Requirements:Some positions in this class require the incumbent to be able to:

  • safely lift 50 pounds while standing and 25 pounds while leaning or lying in various positions
  • climb ladders and poles, and install equipment on towers and other structures
  • stoop, bend, kneel, and squat for extended periods of time
  • differentiate between colors at a level necessary to work with electrical wires
Working Conditions: Some positions in this class require the incumbent to:
  • work outside in all weather conditions
  • work on-call as necessary including nights, weekends and holidays
  • work in a secured detention or correctional facility
License Requirement: Some positions may require possession of a valid California Driver’s License, Class C or higher, prior to appointment to this class. Failure to maintain a valid license may constitute cause for personnel action in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Criminal History and Background Checks: The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 82-602, Personnel Policies and Procedures B-5, and applicable federal and state laws. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidate’s ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information, the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.
The County may also conduct a background check on the candidate prior to appointment to a position within this class. The background check may include personal and professional reference checks, credit history checks, Social Security Number verification, professional license/registration verification, military service information and driving history.
Information obtained in the course of this background check will be considered by the appointing authority in the selection process. In obtaining such information, the County will comply with applicable consent and disclosure practices in the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act.
Probationary Period
The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.

FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)
All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut-off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.
This examination will evaluate the relevance, level, recency, progression and quality of candidate's education, training and experience. The candidate's application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore, the candidate's responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough, detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.
All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their governmentjobs.com inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination.
