OVERVIEW: The Sacramento Crisis Nursery is a family-strengthening program, where parents can bring their children ages 0-5 to one of two Sacramento nurseries for emergency childcare services or overnight care during difficult times. Our mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect by providing support to families in times of crisis. 

The Child Care Worker, under the supervision of the Crisis Nursery Supervisor and the work direction of the Lead Childcare Worker, assists in the total child care and supervision functions of the Crisis Nursery. This position is responsible for ensuring the health, safety and basic needs of children are met and for performing household tasks to comply with standards.

DUTIES:

  • Ensure the safety of the children at all times. 
  • Provide supervision, protection, and care of children individually and in groups at all times.
  • Provide assistance to each child in working with a group and in handling individual problems.
  • Administer discipline and set limits for behavior.
  • Notate child's progress, identification of the possible need for professional services, and communication of such findings to professional staff. 
  • Administer medications and treatment following accurate dosage and times as prescribed or recorded in the child’s chart. 
  • Provide direct child care services being aware of the needs and well-being of all children.
  • Supervise the children at all times. 
  • Attend to all child care needs, including but not limited to diaper changes, bathing, feeding, one-on-one interaction, discipline, etc.
  • Remain alert to physical and/or emotional changes in infants or children indicating the onset of illness, and report any significant changes to a Supervisor. 
  • Interact with and perform intakes and discharges with children and families.
  • Apply crisis intervention techniques to ensure the safety of children and staff.
  • Prepare all meals and snacks and serve family style. 
  • Complete all household tasks including dishes, stocking supplies, laundry, cleaning, organizing, inventory, bed making, vacuuming, and cleaning and sanitizing beds. 
  • Implement developmentally appropriate activities for children. 
  • Immediately communicate any unusual situations to Lead Childcare Worker and support any problem-solving plans. 
  • Support children during the transition to and from activities, napping, meals, etc.
  • Provide transportation for parents and children when needed. 
  • Constantly monitor and maintain the cleanliness and safety of the interior and exterior of the Nursery, in accordance with program and Title 22 regulations. 
  • Complete written documentation per program requirements, and in compliance with agency policy and Community Care Licensing (CCL) regulations within deadlines. 
  • For qualified CCWs, cover for Lead and Lead Awake Childcare workers as directed by the supervisor and manager to benefit services. 
  • Work cooperatively with other staff and volunteers. 
  • Attend approved training classes as required by SCH and CCL. 
  • Attend weekly mandatory site meetings and trainings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

LOCATION: 4533 Pasadena Blvd., Sacramento CA 95821

SCHEDULE: Varies, a minimum of 16 hours a week. Mandatory Wednesday Staff Meeting

SALARY: $17.98 - $20.23 per hour, to start

QUALIFICATIONS


Education and Experience:A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.

Completion of twelve semester units or equivalent quarter units, with a passing grade, as determined by institution is preferred.

  • These classes would have a focus on Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or Child Health at an accredited college or university. Three semester units, or equivalent quarter units, including coursework in the care of infants is preferred.

Six months of work experience in a licensed group home, licensed infant care center, or comparable licensed group child care program is preferred.

Ideal candidates will possess an Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development, Human Services, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Behavioral Science, Child Development , or a related behavioral health/social services degree.

Previous experience working with children 0-5 years old preferred. 

Driving is an essential function of this job. As such, employees in this position will be required to furnish their own vehicle to be used in the course of employment. A valid driver’s license and minimum insurance coverage is also required. Must be at least 21 years old.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Able to read, write, speak and understand the English language. 
  • Knowledge of child development and ability to provide care for children 0-5 years of age. 
  • Ability to understand and implement program/CCL policies, systems, standards, etc. 
  • Ability to relate with children in a nurturing and respectful manner. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries with children and families. 
  • Ability to follow work direction, accept constructive feedback, and demonstrate positive teamwork. 
  • Ability to accept supervision within the Crisis Nursery program and relate constructively to authority. 
  • Ability to work effectively independently, as well as part of a team. 
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a variety of people external to the program, including representatives of other institutions and agencies and parents of the children. 
  • Ability to perform houskeeping tasks, including but not limited to, cleaning, washing clothes, preparing meals, etc. 
  • Skill to communicate effectively in written and oral form. 
  • Skill to plan and organize multiple tasks at one time. 
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics, including addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication, in order to prepare meals, distribute medication, etc. 
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a culturally diverse resident population and work force. 
  • Ability to work with community and outside agencies in a collaborative and cooperative manner. 
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
