Chief Nursing Officer, Monmouth Medical Center

Job Summary:

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) plans, coordinates, and assumes administrative decision-making responsibilities for the nursing division in accordance with federal, state, local regulations, and The Joint Commission standards. As a member of Monmouth Medical Center s senior management team, the CNO actively participates in the hospital's decision-making structure and process. This includes assuming an active leadership role with the hospital's governing body, senior leadership, medical staff, management, and other clinical leaders.

The CNO also maintains responsibility for patient care, management, resources management, Magnet, and fiscal management. At the senior leadership level, the CNO provides effective leadership and coordinates leaders to deliver nursing care, treatment, and services. Additionally, the CNO is responsible for the integration and coordination of all nursing practice and clinical services at Monmouth Medical Center. Through inter-professional delivery models, the CNO drives patient care services across the continuum, ensuring the attainment of performance outcome initiatives and continuously assessing areas for quality improvement.

Reports to:

  • The Chief Nursing Officer reports directly to the President and CEO of Monmouth Medical Center

Essential Functions:

  • Directs the delivery of nursing care, treatment, and services
  • Functions at the senior leadership level, providing effective leadership and coordinating leaders to deliver nursing care, treatment, and services
  • Assumes an active leadership role with the hospital's governing body, senior leadership, medical staff, management, and other clinical leaders in the decision-making structure and process
  • Participates in defined and established meetings of the hospital's corporate leaders and other senior clinical and managerial leaders
  • Coordinates the development and directs the implementation of hospital-wide programs, policies, and procedures that address the nursing care needs of the patient population
  • Coordinates the development and directs the implementation of an effective, ongoing program to measure, analyze, and improve the quality of nursing care, treatment, and services
  • Establishes guidelines for the delivery of nursing care, treatment, and services
  • Writes standards of nursing practice for the hospital, nursing standards of patient care, treatment, and services, nursing policies and procedures, and nurse staffing plans
  • Approves nursing policies, nursing standards of patient care, treatment, and services, and standards of nursing practice for the hospital before implementation
  • Implements nursing policies, procedures, and standards that describe and guide how the staff provide nursing care, treatment, and services
  • Provides access to all nursing policies, procedures, and standards to the nursing staff.
  • Ensures provision of nursing services 24/7 with at least one registered nurse on site who provides or supervises the nursing services
  • Exercises final authority over staff who provide nursing care, treatment, and services
  • Fosters clinical integration across the continuum of patient care services provided by the hospital
  • Creates an environment that supports team morale, improved service, and the highest quality and safety standards
  • Establishes a plan to measure and assess productivity, operational performance, patient throughput, and team member engagement
  • Develops and manages the nursing budget to allocate adequate resources and ensure operational and financial goal achievement
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with all applicable policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Participates in policy implementation and review discussions impacting nursing and patient services
  • Attends and actively engages at Administrative Counsel, Board of Trustee, and Medical Staff Meetings
  • Continuously develops the Nursing/Patient Care Services team through support of the employee selection process, work assignments, performance evaluations, and staff development
  • Recommends, supports, and participates in education services, programs of education, and training
  • Maintains and supports clinical and educational relationships between the hospital and universities/schools of nursing

Job Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse, licensed in the State of New Jersey required
  • Master s degree required (MHA / MBA / MSN / MPH); Doctorate preferred (PhD or DNP).
  • 5 years of progressive nurse leadership experience is required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Broad based knowledge of the full scope of nursing operations in a primary teaching hospital of comparable size and scope
  • High level, complex problem-solving abilities both in groups and in one-on-one situations
  • Ability to translate the mission and vision to everyday work
  • Ability to manage and lead in a matrixed organization
  • Ability to cultivate and foster relationships at every level of the organization (locally at the hospital, within the system, and board relations)
  • Demonstrated success in leading system process improvement initiatives in an acute care facility
  • Highly developed expertise in quantitative analysis to support definition and advancement for the facilities goals and objectives
  • Decisive leader, with the ability to understand physician s viewpoints and needs, and work strategically in the best interest of patients and the facility. A strong reputation for sustained, inclusive, trust-based physician relations
  • Experience in a system with excellent employee, physician and patient satisfaction, quality and outcomes improvement programs
  • An understanding of information systems as they pertain not only to accounting but also to decision support, cost management and revenue enhancement
