Position Summary:

RWA has an opportunity for a Director of Community Development and Planning to lead our Community Development group. This position will be based out of Naples office, but will have the opportunity to work with all office locations in southwest Florida. The ideal candidate is a certified Urban Planner through AICP with experience managing a team and projects in Florida. This position entails close collaboration across multiple disciplines within the firm to develop conceptual and permit-level plans associated with the development of master planned communities, commercial and institutional projects. This position provides significant growth opportunities and will allow the right person to form their very own team.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or a related field
  • MBA or Master’s degree preferred, but not required
  • Licensed Planner (AICP)
  • Fifteen (15) years of experience in all project phases of Urban Planning, and substantial experience in the design of projects
  • Ten (10) years of experience leading multi-disciplinary project teams providing professional services in all areas of Community Development
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
  • Working knowledge of graphical/modeling software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, SketchUp and Adobe)
  • Advanced knowledge of urban design and planning, documentation, zoning codes, diagramming, massing, building and open space typologies/morphologies, and development cost estimates
  • Excellent supervisory, leadership, and team building skills.
  • Ability to write and negotiate contracts for services, consultants, and contractors.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage diverse responsibilities within allotted time and/or budget.
  • Ability to manage, coordinate and delegate tasks in all project phases.
  • Ability to provide quality internal and external client services. This includes assessing client needs, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluating client satisfaction.
  • Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Ability to manage projects within budgetary and time constraints without sacrificing quality.

What you’ll do:

  • Participate with work team on architectural, landscape, and urban design issues through application of the land use code
  • Provide comprehensive design guidance through the design review process in order to produce a desirable project outcome for the community
  • Manage multiple projects such as design review, planned unit development, conditional use, subdivision, and providing public information on the land use code and SEPA, sign code, and comprehensive plan
  • Collaborate with the city’s transportation, utility, building/inspection, fire, and clear and grade staff to fully apply city regulations and standards as well as with individuals and groups representing diverse interests, including owners, developers, builders, designers, architects, landscape architects, neighborhood representatives, neighbors, and other interested parties
  • Serve as project manager on complex development review projects cases or significant technical planning studies
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination on assigned projects between other project participants, including architects, engineers, developers, contractors, and clients
  • Analyze data on conditions such as site location, drainage, environmental reports or structure location for the development of design plans.
  • Prepare, plan, and report for project design elements including, but not limited to, site grading, paving designs, walls, structures, site lighting, planting, and irrigation design
  • Collaborate with architects or other related professionals on design to maximize the aesthetic features of structures or surrounding land and to improve energy efficiency.
  • Present project plans or designs to public stakeholders, such as government agencies or community groups.
