Site Superintendent

R.W. Mercer Co. is a family-owned construction and service company headquartered in Jackson, Michigan with seven locations – six in Michigan and one in Indiana. The company operates in three distinct areas of construction: petroleum contracting and service, general contracting, and electrical. In each area, R.W. Mercer provides a turn-key approach that includes planning, design, construction, and installation as well as service, monitoring, and maintenance.

A General Construction Superintendent at R.W. Mercer is responsible for the execution of all aspects of installation and construction on-site. Construction of infrastructure requires constant supervision to ensure that the construction is happening as per plan. In addition, there is a need for keeping watch on the construction material on site and further requirements. They are a site superintendent who coordinates and manages all the activities on a construction site.

REQUIEMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor.
  • Perform manual work in preparing surfaces.
  • Training, monitoring, assisting, and inspecting excavation, trenching, scaffolding, and ladders.
  • Maintain a clean job site; pick up all tools & equipment and secure job site each day to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Monitoring and ensuring proper material handling and storage.
  • Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Brings problems to the attention of the foreman, safety director, or HR manager.
  • Able to prioritize assigned tasks, handle multiple tasks, and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail-oriented and set high standards for accuracy.
  • Leads by Example.
  • Always maintain professionalism and make sure crew is professional as well.
  • Leadership capabilities to oversee the job start to finish.
  • Ability to read scope of work, submittals, and blueprints.

  • Skilled in hands-on installation of drywall and framing, finish carpentry, store fixtures/displays, acoustical ceilings, concrete patching, caulking, doors and hardware, flooring (carpet tile, base, ceramic tile, VCT, and LVT), bathroom accessories, and minor plumbing.
  • Highly self-motivated with a strong drive to succeed and satisfy all customer internal and external.
  • Proven track record of meeting deadlines and ability to pay close attention to important details of each project.
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Procore (Project Software).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with RWM employees, customers, and subcontractor representatives at all times. Communicates openly by listening and providing feedback.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Safety and Quality

  • Site Supervisor and quality control of RWM and Subcontractor Crews.
  • Responsible for all aspects of site safety, including conducting safety meetings. Work with PM and Field Operations Manager to ensure safety by subcontractor crews.
  • Inspect jobs on a weekly basis or as needed for quality control, safety, and compliance with applicable rules, laws, and statutes.
  • Promotes and creates a safe work environment, leads by example.
  • Conduct Job Hazard Assessments, ensuring onsite safety through proper engineering & administrative controls & using PPE. Address any safety violations or other deficiencies.

Collaborates

  • Review job schedule and cost breakdown with Salesman, Project Manager and Field Operations Manager prior to job start.
  • Work together with Project Manager and Field Operations Manager to communicate scheduling needs: laborers, carpenters, technicians, materials, equipment, and subcontractors as required.
  • Work with the Project Manager to coordinate pulling permits, sourcing subcontractors and staff, order materials, and schedule work to complete project on time and on budget.
  • Subcontractor management – ensure their work is being performed in accordance with plans, specifications, and purchase orders. Work with Project Manager to ensure subcontractor accountability.
  • Build relationships with subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Work with Field Operations Manager to maintain control over tools and equipment is required.
  • Keep progress schedule current and communicate with Project Manager regarding updates to schedule.
  • Communicate equipment, tool needs, and/or repairs to Field Operations Manager.

Leadership and Communication

  • Properly layout the project, making sure proper grades are established and followed by RWM personnel on site and all RWM subcontractors.
  • Setup office and equipment trailers as necessary and work with PM and Field Operations Manager to ensure that all permits, labor notices, safety rules & regulations are posted as required.
  • Manages all on-site construction activities. Including Subcontractor Management, workload completion and communication with Project Manager on any issues or concerns.
  • Provides solutions to solve problems or increase value to the project to meet or exceed expectations of the project.
  • Prompt communication with the Project Manager and salesman on any changes or addition to work / supplements required and obtain approvals for all change orders prior to work starting.
  • Work and develop colleagues on site: laborers, train laborers, and safety compliance.
  • Managing Weekly Inventory with Laborers.
  • Communicates ALL discrepancies for materials, delivery tickets, and receipt of materials.
  • Assists with Callbacks.
  • Organize, supervises, leads, and trains colleagues to complete projects within established guidelines, schedule, budget, and goals are met or exceeded. Monitors the budget throughout the project and communicates variances as they occur.
  • Manages customer expectations through proper setting and monitoring of expectations.
  • Actively participates in development of self, team, and co-workers with company specific training and initiatives.
  • Upload and exemplify high standard of ethics, integrity, and core values of RW Mercer.
  • Plan reading and executing to ensure the project is complete per manufacturer and engineering specifications.
  • Effectively manage and communicate details including completing daily progress reports, completion of paperwork, tracking the projects status, updating the database, uploading documents, training, and recording permits and other necessary documentation. While maintaining communication with Project Manager’s and Field Operations Manager to ensure the customer’s expectations are being met or exceeded.
  • Complete hands-on work to keep the project on schedule.
  • Participate in an on-call schedule for after-hours service call.
  • Monitor performance and take corrective action as necessary to meet objectives.
  • Schedule all inspections throughout the project to maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Daily Field Reports are legible and to the point for construction activities, submission to PM regularly.
  • Periodic photos to document job progress or areas of concern.
  • Complete punch list prior to leaving the site. Work with the property owners to develop punch list and ensure satisfactory completion of projects.
  • Return all unused material to inventory (warehouse).
  • Conduct Training with owner prior to site turnover.
  • Additional duties as assigned and needed by management.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 18 years old or older and possess High School Diploma, GED, or equivalency.
  • Must have 5 years of construction or restoration experience.
  • 2-3 years of experience managing project budgets.
  • Able to travel 100% of the time for projects including for extended periods of time.
  • Retail Construction Experience is a plus.
  • 8-10 years general construction industry experience. Can be gained while employed at R.W. Mercer.
  • Clean driving record and eligible to operate a motor vehicle (CDL license, if possible, by not required).
  • Ability to operate equipment: Bobcat and Backhoe (requested but not required).

Working is performed primarily outside with some travel; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; exposure to possible hazardous traffic conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery and uneven surfaces and rough terrain; may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a construction environment; walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weights; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Digging and working in trenches. Working in confined spaces, from heights, and hot/cold weather conditions.
