The Advanced Learning and Analytics Team, part of the AI Discipline, at RTX Research Center (RTRC) is looking for a highly motivated machine learning research engineer to push the state of art in machine learning for aerospace and defense applications. The team researches and develops machine learning, computer vision, reinforcement learning, large language models and human computer interaction solutions for a variety of high impact real world problems in the aerospace, manufacturing and defense industries. Examples include autonomy, multi-agent coordination, cybersecurity, material discovery and design, automated visual inspection of parts, robotic perception and prognostics and health management.
The role
We're looking for a highly motivated candidate eager to use and extend state of the art Machine Learning approaches in the above areas.
A strong candidate:
Has strong research credentials as evidenced by publications in leading ML conferences/Journals or demonstrated open-source software development in one or more areas of
Computer Vision, Physics Informed Machine Learning, Neurosymbolic ML, Large Language Models, Reinforcement Learning, Signal Processing
Has served as hands on technical lead on applied research projects.
Has broad understanding of ML approaches and mathematical aptitude.
Demonstrates the potential to initiate, lead, and execute projects through internal and external R&D.
Additionally, this role requires an ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team partnering with universities, government agencies, and national labs. The role requires strong communication skills and the ability to provide timely, accurate and detailed presentations, as well as documenting and publishing approaches and findings for in papers, white papers and patents for internal and external audiences.
Basic Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a combination of the following:
  • 5 years of hands-on experience in various ML techniques, algorithms, off-the-shelf packages and development environments.
  • Ability to understand and use details of an engineering problem statement, formulate it as an ML problem and identify candidate ML approaches.
  • Original research experience in synthesizing and combining multiple ML approaches to address novel engineering problems.
  • Broad awareness of customer needs in the area of AI and ML for defense and aerospace applications
  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident () status is required.
  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong mathematical background in statistics and linear algebra
  • Experience setting technical direction from initiation to execution of projects and managing technical deliverables for a small team
  • 3 years of professional ML experience.
  • 3 years of experience applying and adapting ML approaches from academic literature to real world problems.
Required Education:
Required: B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or related quantitative field
Preferred: M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or related quantitative field

Clear and effective communication with all levels of management, business development, researchers and customers
Ability to focus and determine task priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment

The following position is to join our Corporate or RTX Research Center Team:
Requires advanced knowledge of work area typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience. May have practical knowledge of project
management. Practical to substantial knowledge of RTX projects, programs or systems with the ability to make enhancements and leverage in daily work.
Typically requires:
A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience
Engineering/Other Technical Positions:
Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
Hired applicants may be eligible for benefits, including but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, flexible work schedules, employee assistance program, Employee Scholar Program, parental leave, paid time off, and holidays. Specific benefits are dependent upon the specific business unit as well as whether or not the position is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement.
Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company's performance.
This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
