Description

Telecom Tech Job Description:

The following job description describes the general duties, requirements and qualifications for the classification of journeyman telecommunications at the Communication Installer Trainee level 4 wage rate. Each individual's group classification and corresponding wage rate is based on the percentage of the following job description with respect to the skills, education and experience that each individual possesses.

Any employee, regardless of their group classification or wage rate, may be required to perform all of the following tasks in their entirety or in part. In addition, this job description is general and may not include all of the skills, responsibilities, qualifications or education necessary to accomplish the work required by this, or any other position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Proceeds with work from plans and specifications, has knowledge of all low voltage equipment and tools. Understands the scope of drawings and specifications and demonstrates ability to work with others in a team aspect.

  1. Works with journeymen and other trainees on site
  2. Is responsible for materials and tools
  3. Install all work effectively, completely and in a neat and workmanlike manner
  4. Trouble shoots all telecommunication systems
  5. Helps with layout work from blueprints, shop drawings and schematics.
  6. All phases of telecom construction - rough cabling above/below grade, all types of backbone distribution, MDF/IDF construction, termination and testing of copper and fiber cabling systems.
  7. Communicate effectively with all persons and parties involved with a project as necessary to ensure timely and cost-effective completion of assignments

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

LICENSES - Current driver's license and have own transportation. Most job sites are not always served by public transportation.

EDUCATION - High School Graduate, G.E.D., or equivalent training.

EXPERIENCE - Has a minimum of 2 years full time telecommunications construction experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Job requires working in all elements, depending on job location, time of year, heat, cold, rain, snow.
  2. Must be able to utilize construction site sanitary facilities (portable toilets).
  3. Job requires employee to have all required personal tools with them at all times (waist tool belt as worn weighs approximately 30 lbs.).
  4. Work from all types of ladders; step ladders up to 20', "A" frame ladders and all sizes of extension ladders, and carry and relocate up to 16' step ladders by one's self.
  5. Employee's personal weight and personal tools combined cannot exceed the weight limit of ladders (Class 1 - 250 lbs., Class 1A - 300 lbs.).
  6. Perform work at various heights, up to 100' from ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks or other safe work areas.
  7. Work in restricted areas such as switchgear rooms, manholes, utility tunnels and vaults, crawl spaces and attics.
  8. Wear personal protective equipment; hard hat, safety glasses, boots, long pants and sleeved shirt all suitable for construction work at all times while working, and ear plugs or respirators when required.
  9. Repetitive use of arms, hands and fingers.
  10. Able to work 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, overtime as required and night shifts.

Qualifications


Qualifications:

  1. Positively identify colors of wires.
  2. Comprehends written documents, specifications, drawings, blueprints and schematics.
  3. Must use all power tools such as saws, wirepullers and powder-actuated tools.
  4. Capable of digging trenches either by use of hand tools or power equipment.
  5. Practices and comprehends safe work procedures, hazard communication, accident reporting and investigation as outlined in the Rex Moore Electrical Contractors & Engineers' Safety & Health Guide.
  6. Operates two handed tools and equipment such as cable cutters, hammer drills, shovels, picks, compression tools.
  7. Read and interpret maps, instructional manuals, specifications, work site directions, blueprints and written or verbal instructions.
  8. Operate and work from electric or gas-powered mechanical personnel lifts.

PHYSICAL FUNCTION:

  1. Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, climb, kneel, balance, push, pull and reach overhead.
  2. Lift 75 lbs.
  3. Constantly moving on the feet.
  4. Climb all types and sizes of ladders.
  5. Complete overhead work for full day assignments.
  6. Must be able to make the transition from employee parking area or street into construction work areas and to gain access to all levels of the building, even if the only means of access is by O.S.H.A. approved site construction ladder or stairs still under construction but acceptable for use.
  7. Possess good vision normal or corrected.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:

Telecom Techs report directly to the Telecom Foreman.
