JOB DESCRIPTION

FOOD AND CLOTHING PROGRAMS SUPERVISOR

JOB OVERVIEW

The Food and Clothing Supervisor, an exempt position, reporting directly to the Director of Crisis

Assistance and Food Operations. This position supervises the quality fulfillment of all food operations

under the Rowan Helping Ministries’ Umbrella (Food Pantries, Jeannie’s Kitchen, Food for Thought, and

Clothing Closest) while connecting and mobilizing volunteers to serve in these areas of the ministry. The

duties and responsibilities of this position require approximately 40 hours per week. The hours must be

flexible to meet the needs and demands of the position.

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage staff
  • Maintain quality, efficiency, and safety within food and clothing operations.
  • Oversee inventory of food operations
  • Connect food and clothing volunteers to other volunteer opportunities within Rowan Helping
Ministries and expand volunteer responsibilities in food operations.
  • Ensure that reporting and compliance standards are met for all Food Programs.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Hire, train, and manage staff in food programs. Work with staff to maintain high standards,
communicate regularly, and follow processes.
  • Maintain high standards for all areas of Food Operation, from cleanliness to organization, food
safety, timely use of donated food, and following process and procedure guidelines.
  • Oversee the Food for Thought program and act as a liaison to schools/CIS for the Food for Thought
initiative.
  • Oversee Food Pantry operations and implement a strategic plan to create a shelf shop model that
emphasizes healthy food choices.
  • Meet contractual obligations required by the V.A., Second Harvest Food Bank, and USDA
regarding cleanliness, use, storage, reporting, etc.
  • Prepare and submit all government and statistical reports accurately and on a timely basis.
  • Cultivate relationships with food/equipment donors/potential donors and volunteers for each food
initiative.
  • Work with the Food Operations Manager to provide complete, nutritious weekly menus using
donated food – for meals prepared in Jeannie’s Kitchen.
  • Assure donated food items are being incorporated into weekly menus and used on a timely basis
and waste is addressed and logged.
  • Daily walk with dedicated staff through food and clothing areas. Ensure staff accountability to
standard practices and environmental expectations. Document and follow up as needed.
  • Manage visual inventory levels, maintain a competitive shopping file, and shop/order needed
staples and effectively plan, manage, and order food inventory. Maintain physical inventory

spreadsheet where necessary.

  • Assist in the creation of the annual budget and manage financial budgets for the Pantry, Jeannie’s
Kitchen, and Food for Thought.
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Manager in recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers.
  • Collaborate with East & West Food Pantries to ensure successful satellite programs.
  • Other duties as necessary.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong multi-tasking skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Prior leadership experience - Proven in developing new programs and overseeing complex
organizational processes
  • Prior Management of Staff - Able to train and develop a team, communicate effectively and
provide expectations and feedback (good and bad) regularly.
  • A demonstrated desire to provide and uphold dignity in the operation and fulfillment of programs
that serve guests and clients.
  • Solid understanding of inventory management.
  • Exceptional reporting and analytical skills.
  • Willingness to maintain high standards and collaborate with others to attain those standards.
  • A drive to constantly improve processes and efficiencies within the areas of responsibility.
  • Willingness, and ability, to participate in physical labor as needed (ability to lift 40 lbs. and be on
one’s feet 4-6 hours each day)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must be at least 21 years old, possess a four-year college degree in business management or
organizational development, and three years’ experience in supervision/management. Prior food

and/or retail management experience preferred. Forklift Certification (will be provided upon hire

if the applicant does not have the certification).

  • Must be compassionate and work with diverse people and can establish rapport with clients,
volunteers, and staff. Must be detail-oriented, organized, and write legibly. Be a good listener with

a friendly, understanding, empathic, and non-judgmental attitude. Works as part of a team. Must

be able to demonstrate leadership and interpersonal skills. Computer literate especially Excel.

Able to adapt in a fast-paced environment. Must possess a vehicle and a valid North Carolina

driver’s license.
