Job Description

Position Overview

This is a senior-level position reporting to the Firm’s Corporate Health and Safety Director/Principal Scientist. In this role, the Senior Health and Safety Specialist will be responsible for developing and improving upon existing health and safety (H&S) programs and will serve as the primary Senior H&S Specialist for our California operations. This role will include management of existing H&S protocols, staff training, performing H&S related field audits, as well as supporting loss and near loss assessments.

Position Requirements:

  • Must have a B.S. degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Public Health or related field or equivalent relevant work experience (equivalency of 2 years work experience to 1 year college).
  • Candidates possessing professional credentials or capable of obtaining credentials such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of work experience which includes H&S program management in an industrial, construction or consulting work environment required. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including collaborative and team building skills. 
  • Proactive and independent with the ability to take initiative.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with federal and state laws, regulations, and best practices applicable to OSHA and USEPA Regulations. 
  • Proficient with effective behavioral based safety practices.
  • Ability to manage and evaluate safety metrics to determine measures of success and improvements to the firm’s safety culture.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficient with or the ability to quickly learn safety management software systems. 
  • Knowledge of the structure of occupational and environmental H&S activities related to environmental consulting services is desired. Safety training experience preferred. OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification preferred; RCRA and DOT certifications a plus.

Essential Duties:

  • Support existing H&S programs, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including company policies under the direction of the CHSD.
  • Build and maintain a collaborative working relationship with Office Operation Managers pertaining to their safety programs.
  • Prepare, review and audit project specific H&S plans in accordance with federal, state and local regulations.
  • Participate in technical reviews, updating of Corporate H&S programs as well as developing new programs to address Firm’s evolving needs.
  • Maintain monthly safety training programs including tracking of employee compliance with established requirements.
  • Conduct general and job specific H&S training for technical staff. Assist with managing our Short Service Employee Program for the Firm.
  • Conduct field assessments and audits with the goal of improving the safety, compliance and culture of the firm’s operations.
  • Collaborate with the CHSD and other Office Health and Safety Managers (OHSM) with respect to near loss and loss assessments including implementation of corrective actions and conformance with the firm’s compliance tracking systems.
  • Participate in incident reviews and coordinate amongst all departments.
  • Manage Firm’s Learning Management System (LMS) for H&S related trainings.
  • Present assessment of audit findings verbally and in written form to all levels of the firm.
  • Manage and participate in client specific projects related to H&S programs.

Base Salary Range: $90,000 - $120,000. This salary range is based on what Roux in good faith believes it might pay at the time of posting for this position and for this geographic location. Actual compensation may vary based on job-related factors such as relevant work experience, market conditions, education/training, certifications, skill sets, and internal equity. In addition, this position is eligible for quarterly performance bonuses based on individual job performance and the profitability of the firm.
