The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is patient, kind, organized and energetic. Directors of Activities should be encouraging to residents so they want to attend activities but will also need to be respectful of their right to decline. This position will report to the Administrator and by applying for the position you recognize that nothing in this job description restricts management’s right to assign or reassign duties or responsibilities to this job at any time. You may be asked to help in other areas of the building as needed for the optimal performance of your building/department and the well-being of our residents.

Essential Job Functions:

As a Director of Activities in a Grace Management Services facility, you must be able to perform the following essential functions as demonstrated by the ability to:

  • Staff the activities department including scheduling, adhering to budgeted hours, adhering to departmental budget, and hiring, training, evaluating, supervise and terminate employees as needed.
  • Plan, schedule and implement a program of individual and group activities based on residents’ needs and interests.
  • Ensure that all residents are properly interviewed and assessed prior to the initial resident care conference and include assessment information in the medical record.
  • Identify and documents in the resident’s care plan the activity interests, needs and problems of the residents. Update the MDS assessment, RAPS and care plan as needed and according to regulations.
  • Serve as an active member of the interdisciplinary team attending all resident care conferences and integrating the recreation plan as part of the total resident plan of care.
  • Maintain departmental documentation that reflects services provided and resident progress towards goals including progress notes, participation records, one-to-one records, etc.
  • Communicate facility programs and organize community events with residents, staff, family and volunteers.
  • Plan and coordinate weekend and evening activities as needed per resident interest.
  • Develop and maintain departmental goals and objectives with procedures for implementation.
  • Evaluate the overall effectiveness of the resident recreation program and, as necessary, modify the program to meet resident needs and interests.
  • Involve residents in planning, developing and evaluating activities program.
  • Supervise barber and beauty shop activities.
  • Maintain an adequate supply of materials to implement recreation programs.
  • Manage the activity fund account.
  • Participate in continuing education and training to maintain professional certification/qualifications.
  • Comply with all facility policies and procedures.
  • Comply with all state, federal and OSHA regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Administrator.

Job Qualifications

  • Is licensed or registered, if applicable, by the State in which practicing; and Is eligible for certification as a therapeutic
    recreation specialist or as an activities professional by a recognized accrediting body on or after October 1, 1990; OR
  • Has 2 years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, 1 of which was full-time in a patient activities program in a health care setting; OR
  • Is a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant; or
    Has completed a training course approved by the state
  • All candidates must be proficient in basic computer programs and must be able to correspond timely through e-mail or other forms of technical communication as needed to successfully complete the requirements for this job. Individuals may be required to:

  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time
  • Reach above shoulder heights, below waist or lift as required to complete the job responsibilities
  • Proper lifting techniques, ability to read computer screens and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions are required
  • Must be able to lift 50 to 75 pounds. Raising objects from lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This requirement occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Must be able to balance, climb, crouch, grasp, kneel, pull, push, reach, stand and stoop adequately to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Must be able to hear, smell, feel and speak adequately to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Must be able to read and write the English language.
  • Must be able to work inside and outside with exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
