JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Juvenile Probation Officer
REPORTS TO: Presiding Probate/Family Division Judge, Juvenile Director/Referee, and
Lead Juvenile Officer
SUMMARY
Investigates assigned cases and recommends appropriate disposition of juvenile cases. Supervises youth under the Court’s jurisdiction, maintains case documentation, and performs other case supervision related functions.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Interviews law enforcement officers, youth, youth’s families, victims, school officials, agencies involved with clients; reviews incident reports and police records; assesses home environment; and obtains other relevant information necessary for services and dispositional recommendations.
2. Assesses information obtained during investigations and recommends most appropriate disposition, including placement, casework and treatment plans, support services, in-home care services, and other relevant terms and conditions.
3. Orients youth and parents to terms and conditions of probation, case plans, goals and objectives, services, consequences of non-compliance, and other case related matters.
4. Meets regularly with youth and parents, as necessary, to discuss and monitor compliance with terms and conditions of probation, case plans and other case supervision related conditions. Obtains, reviews and discusses attendance, treatment status/progress reports with school officials, treatment agencies and others involved with youth.
5. Intervenes, as necessary, and discusses and attempts to resolve personal problems and crisis youth and/or families are experiencing relating to employment, family relationship, education and other matters. Makes referrals to outside agencies for counseling and treatment as necessary.
6. After hours on-call rotation to respond to crisis and emergency situations and determines the most appropriate response in accordance with case history, court policies and procedures, court rules and statutes.
7. Consults with child care facility staff, foster parents, court staff, treatment agency staff and others involved in providing services to youth or monitoring youth’ progress to discuss case status and progress, casework plan modifications and other case issues involving assigned youth.
8. Documents interaction with youth, youth’s families and others involved with youth and/ or youth’s families, including telephone calls, meetings, and other relevant contacts. Maintains case files and records.
9. Meets with school staff as needed to determine the educational status of youth involved with the court system.
10. Administers approved alcohol and drug screening tests to youth on probation.
11. Initiates the paperwork for violation proceedings.
12. Writes reports to the Juvenile Referee/Judge including recommendations for disposition.
13. Collaborates with other professionals to ensure the needs of the youth are being met.
14. Establishes a relationship with youth; serves as a role model, tracks and supports the youth’s progression.
15. Appears in court and testifies regarding case investigations and recommendations, and probation violation proceedings.
16. May be required to restrain, secure, take custody, and/or transport youth when necessary.
17. Assists in developing child care fund budget.
18. Assists in developing and utilizing child care fund based programs and grant programs.
19. Assists in other areas of the Court as requested/required.
20. Responsible for any other jobs assigned by the Court and/or Juvenile Director/Referee.

11. Ability to read, interpret, and apply procedures, rules, technical information, instructions, and manuals.
12. Ability to use discretion and maintain sensitive and confidential information.
13. Adaptability to change in the work environment, managing competing demands, and ability to deal with frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events.
14. Aptitude in performing mathematical calculations and checking figures, postings, and documents for correct entry, mathematical accuracy, and proper coding.
15. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
16. Knowledge of the principles and processes for effective teamwork; represent the Department and the County in a positive, professional manner.
17. Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
18. Proficient skills using Microsoft Office programs including, but not limited to: Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor’s degree in social work, criminal justice, education, behavioral sciences, or a related field that qualifies the person to manage or supervise the delivery of juvenile services.
Experience: Minimum 6 months of casework experience in a court or closely related setting preferred, which could include internships, orientation and/or on-the-job training in this position
