What we are looking for

We are currently seeking a property Senior Tax Associate who will play a primary role in developing Roots Tax function and its strategy. Reporting directly to the Controller, the Senior Tax Associate will establish and lead a small team of tax analysts and be responsible for setting up a successful and efficient property Tax department.

This role will be hybrid based out of our Addison, TX or Gilbert, AZ corporate offices.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support internal property Tax team, including attracting, developing, and retaining talent.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the annual tax cycle (focused on personal property, property, Real Estate, Sales & Use taxes) for assigned portfolios and build and manage Tax infrastructure that drives productivity, automation, and optimization of that cycle.
  • Manage the property Tax compliance function for Roots, including the filing of Tax returns and remitting subsequent payments.
  • Coordinate and manage third-party consultants to assist with Tax minimization and audit defense, if needed.
  • Assist with property valuation analysis, if needed, and proactively review appraisals to determine if the property is being correctly valued as required by statute, filing complaints with tax assessors or review boards with respect to the correction of excessive assessments and following through on all complaints to obtain equitable assessments.
  • Staying ahead of applicable tax laws and regulations via various research and reporting tools and working closely with Tax authorities and or consultants to understand tax law changes and positions on complex issues to minimize the company’s Tax liability.
  • Participate in and managing special projects, including system-related implementations impacting Tax compliance.
  • Complete account reconciliations and other controls necessary for ensuring compliance.
  • Document policies and procedures and ensuring records are available for internal and external audits.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education / Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or related field
  • 3 years leadership, supervisory or managerial experience
  • 3 years’ experience in personal property and real estate tax preferred

Experience / Knowledge / Proficiencies:

  • Strong leadership skills, including ability to communicate effectively, prioritize multiple workflows, and train and develop staff.
  • Knowledge of personal and real property tax laws, regulations, and filings preferred.
  • Excellent problems solving skills and ability to deliver results in a deadline driven environment.
  • Strong understanding of accounting and ability to reconcile data to the general ledger and filed return.
  • High proficiency with data analysis and advanced knowledge of spreadsheet and database tools.
  • Experience in streamlining processes and process design or improvement.
  • Ability to assess issues, make quick decisions, implement solutions, and influence change at various levels of staff and management.
  • Experience in dealing with change management and company integrations.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision while being involved with a variety of systems, technologies, and different business areas.
  • Strong sense of ownership of work products.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, and Excel).
