Detailed Job Description
This position will be responsible for the growth, management, and operation of the Recycling Research program at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at RIT. Initially this position will leverage resources from GIS staff, but the position will also include direct management of staff over time as the program grows. This position will be responsible for the financial viability of the recycling research program.
A major role of the position will be to develop strong relationships with Industry, research sponsors, and other potential stakeholders, identify project opportunities and develop them into funded projects. The primary technical focus of the director will be on developing new approaches to technical challenges and conducting applied research in the area of recycling. Duties will also include representing GIS at industry forums and events,and strengthening and developing new technical capabilities within the GIS technical staff. In addition to recycling, the program director will work with the GIS Director and the GIS Technical Director (as well as other research faculty and staff) to develop new research initiatives and research capabilities in design for re-X, remanufacturing, and the Circular Economy construct, and will collaborate on research projects with other GIS business units.
Major responsibilities of this position:
  • Develop and execute strategic plan for the Recycling Research program and lead business development, marketing, and outreach strategies
  • Build awareness of the recycling research program and GIS capabilities; develop and maintain relationships with industrial customers, funding agencies, and pertinent trade and government organizations
  • Ideate potential technical solutions and lead and conduct applied research to develop new technologies to improve the economics and material recovery rates in recycling
  • Identify potential government, non-profit, and private research funding sponsors. Lead proposal content writing for recycling technology research and development projects, as well as for other GIS initiatives (as needed)
  • Develop and manage existing and new laboratory capabilities in support of recycling initiatives
  • Develop organizational expertise in technical areas of recycling though current staff development and hiring new staff as needed to meet program demands
  • Manage technical teams of researchers and students in development of new recycling technologies and capabilities
  • Present and publish technical results of research and coordinate development and delivery of short course training programs
  • Stay abreast of leading technology and approaches, as well as industry, consumer, and economic challenges impeding effective and increased recycling

The Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) is a leading sustainability research and education organization at Rochester Institute of Technology. GIS is made up of a diverse set of academic programs and applied research centers focused on the optimization of industrial systems to maximize material and energy efficiency while minimizing adverse environmental impacts. Our six industry-facing applied research centers focus on sustainable manufacturing, energy, transportation, and buildings. They work to develop advanced technologies, sustainable industrial processes and practices, and data-informed policy recommendations. Each year, about 100 companies, governments, and other organizations engage GISs research centers on a variety of projects to solve technical problems, innovate products or processes, research manufacturing technologies, reduce their environmental footprint, or commercialize a new technology. Research center projects are led by full-time professional staff with significant industry experience and access to nearly 90,000 square feet of infrastructure including state- of-the-art labs and testbeds.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience:
  • The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline, chemistry or material science, and a masters degree (MBA, or MS in a technical discipline).
  • A minimum of 8 years of directly related work experience is required.
Must have these skills:
  • Strong motivation to advance the state-of-the-art in recycling
  • In-depth knowledge of recycling industry and material separation processes
  • Strong technical capability in degree area
  • Hands-on industrial experience in a recycling environment
  • Significant research and development experience in recycling
  • Experience in technical sales and/or relationship building with customers
  • Experience writing proposals (internal corporate and/or state, federal, etc.)
  • Experience leading teams
  • Evidence of leadership in project management. Skill in project scoping, managing project resources, and developing relationships with partners. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong problem solving and strategic thinking skills
  • Self-starter with ideas to bring to the GIS team
  • Interest and ability in working collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals. Comfortable soliciting input, valuing others ideas and expertise.
  • Comfortable working both independently and cooperatively with other team members and project partners.
The position has immediate oversight of employees while most of the time performing the same or directly related work as those the position leads.
