The NTID Regional STEM Center (NRSC) promotes training and participation for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) high school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. NRSC achieves its goals of improving access to postsecondary STEM education and employment for students by:
  • Enhancing understanding about opportunities for DHH individuals in STEM careers among middle and high school students, teachers, counselors, and vocational rehabilitation (VR) counselors.
  • Improving the instructional and technical skills of high school teachers in STEM areas.
  • Establishing, expanding, and improving pathways for DHH students to transition from high school to associate degrees, to baccalaureate degrees, and beyond in STEM areas.
  • Improving access to learning for DHH students who may be in mainstream classes, with or without support and access services.
  • Developing employers' awareness of DHH individuals as potential employees and how they can be hired and successfully integrated into the STEM workforce.
  • Improving the STEM knowledge and sign language skills of American Sign Language interpreters.
The NRSC works in partnership with multiple departments, units and offices within NTID including but not limited to: Academic Affairs, Access Services, Admissions, Budget and Finance, Co-op and Career Center, DeafTEC, External Affairs, Marketing Communications, Pre-College Outreach, Project Fast Forward, Student and Academic Services, Summer Transition Program, and Vocational Rehabilitation.
Responsibilities:
  • Participate in executing the vision and mission for growth of the NTID Regional STEM Center (NRSC) with an emphasis on STEM education and outreach, contributing to the pipeline of DHH middle school and high school students to RIT/NTID. The five NRSC audiences include: 1) students and their families, 2) educators, 3) sign language interpreters, 4) employers and 5) vocational rehabilitation professionals. This position will focus on students and their families, educators, and vocational rehabilitation professionals.
  • Serve as a member of the core NRSC team at NTID and report to the Senior Director of such.
  • Responsible for the vision, negotiation, development, establishment, oversight and maintenance of regional STEM Academy programs supported by the NTID Regional STEM Center. The goal is to eventually establish at least four regional programs in the United States, serving secondary deaf and hard of hearing secondary students.
  • Negotiate, develop, oversee, and manage annual plans, budgets and schedules for the regional STEM Academy programs.
  • Provide in-depth training, mentoring, guidance, professional development and evaluation for personnel working in the regional STEM academy programs.
  • Serve as the liaison between NTID's Summer Transition Program (STP) and regional STEM academy programs.
  • Provide assistance for NTID's STP as appropriate, drawing on knowledge and expertise of the STEM academy programs.
  • Develop working relationships with and serve as point of contact between the regional STEM Academy programs and various departments and units at NTID that partake in the Summer Transition Program and STEM Academy activities.
  • Conduct feedback, research and/or surveys, collect data, do analysis and provide reports, metrics, and budgeting information to the Senior Director of NRSC AT NTID and NTID Administration.
  • Represent NTID and NRSC at conferences and related programs for the purpose of promoting NTID and NRSC. As appropriate, conduct presentations on related topics.

Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience:
  • Bachelors degree in Education, Human and Social Services, Business, Communication or related fields.
  • 5-7 years of related experience or equivalent.
Skills:
  • Demonstrated exemplary skills in the following areas: program development, communication, interpersonal interactions, organization and multi-tasking, time management, and budget management,
  • Development of short- and long-term program plans.
  • Ability to make significant independent programming judgements and decisions.
  • Ability to learn state and federal laws pertaining to working with minors.
  • Ability to compile, collect and analyze data for program review and reporting.
  • Sensitivity to ethnic, socioeconomic and communication diversity.
  • American Sign Language skills or willingness to learn to be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of prospective DHH students and individuals.
