Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
  • Serve as "Technical Director" or on-site support engineer for live events. This includes planning, facility set-up, networking, and equipment layouts. Schedule and oversee technicians, install, test operation, and removal of all production event support technology equipment for production events, including live event productions, conference and presentation events, power distribution services, audio and lighting based events for which RIT Tech Crew deploys equipment.
  • Work as liaison between RIT Tech Crew and other technical/facilities personnel. Oversee and resolve technical problems as quickly as possible to provide a seamless event.
  • Provide oversight to, coordination of, and/or direct responsibility for the preventative maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the facilities systems and equipment including, but not limited to audio systems, lighting systems, rigging systems, power distribution systems, and staging systems. Develop and monitor quality control practices with work in progress.
  • Recruit, manage, mentor, train, and supervise student employees, engineering and technical coop students, and occasional temporary employees. Oversees the formal career ladder Tech Crew training program to ensure that the student workforce is safe and following all legal and technical requirements. This program, with the assistance of the Associate Director, includes the oversight for 4-5 weekly classes and the review of competency requirements for ten different job descriptions as well as a review of the training manual as needed or at least annually.
  • Manages the Tech Crew shop area overseeing the student Shop Foreman. Oversees work schedules, task assignments, tool inventories and safety equipment.
  • Collaborate with other departments and divisions on campus, including Gordon Field House personnel, Facilities Management Services team, University Production Services, the division of Development and Alumni Relations, RIT Dining Services, RIT Public Safety, as well as external partners to define needs, identify potential problems, understand requirements, and provide solutions to production systems, both internal and external.
  • Assist in recommending and implementing changes and upgrades of production and event equipment and supplies.

Required Qualifications
  • 1-2 years of technical event management experience required
  • 1-2 years maintenance and support experience of audio, lighting, and production equipment required
Preferred Qualifications
Specialized Skills, Experience, or Training:
  • Experience with set-up and operation of in house video equipment
  • Experience with testing and maintenance of audio, lighting, rigging, staging, and power distribution equipment
  • Preferred Bachelor's degree in ME/EE/CE/IT, Theatre Design and Technology or other related technical field but not required
  • Prior experience in an educational setting
  • CM Lodestar Motor Mechanic Certification
  • ETCP Rigging Certification
  • Dante Level III Certification
  • OSHA 10 Hour Training
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and electronic communications skills, including the ability to convey complex information in accessible terms to diverse or multicultural audiences.
  • Ability to establish, build and maintain effective working relationships based on respect, empathy and honesty with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Ability to manage and maintain confidential and private information; uses confidential, sensitive and/or private records and information, protects information appropriately.
  • Computer competence using software and enterprise systems appropriate for the complexities of the role and its functions.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture, American Sign Language (ASL), or willingness to learn.
  • Strong background in event production (preferably both operations and engineering) and a thorough knowledge of the current tools and technologies including Network and IT infrastructures for Audio and Lighting workflows.
  • In-depth knowledge of Audio signal processing systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of lighting systems both conventional and intelligent as well as analog and network based control.
  • Experience in theatrical and arena rigging practices and principles.
  • General knowledge of woodworking and metalworking.
  • Knowledge and experience in site design, event layout, equipment configuration and function, staffing requirements and capability, and integration of all related services for event planning, staging and operation of remotes.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Skill in hiring, training, and mentoring students and part time employees
  • Ability to oversee contract worker, vendors, and maintenance and repairs within multiple facilities
  • Ability to thoroughly research problems and implement their solutions

Job Summary
Reporting to the Associate Director of Tech Crew this position serves as a professional partner for the numerous functions/services that encompass Tech Crew. The Assistant Director is the lead professional in supporting live events; which includes pre/post production meetings discussing needs, management and distribution of staff and ongoing technical support required for events and facilities. The position provides engineering and support (both as Technical Director and/or as a member of the engineering team), as well as providing ongoing support for the systems related to our production/events infrastructure. The Assistant Director will provide strategic leadership in the recruitment, hiring and training of over 70 student employees. The successful candidate requires experience in audio, lighting, and IT operations to support the event production systems that rely on a networked equipment infrastructure. Nights and weekends are often required, especially during peak production times.
