Detailed Job Description
Please note: Travel required. Must be able to work evenings and weekends as assigned/ needed.
The NTID Regional STEM Center (NRSC) promotes training and participation for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) high school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. NRSC achieves its goals of improving access to postsecondary STEM education and employment for students by:
  • Enhancing understanding about opportunities for DHH individuals in STEM careers among middle and high school DHH students and their families, teachers, counselors, amd vocational rehabilitation (VR) counselors.
  • Improving the instructional and technical skills of high school teachers in STEM areas.
  • Establishing, expanding, and improving pathways for DHH students to transition from high school to associate degrees, to baccalaureate degrees, and beyond in STEM areas.
  • Improving access to learning for DHH students who may be in mainstream classes, with or without support and access services.
  • Developing employers' awareness of DHH individuals as potential employees and how they can be hired and successfully integrated into the STEM workforce.
  • Improving the STEM knowledge and sign language skills of American Sign Language interpreters.
The NRSC works in partnership with multiple departments, units and offices within NTID including but not limited to: Academic Affairs, Access Services, Admissions, Budget and Finance, Co-op and Career Center, DeafTEC, External Affairs, Marketing Communications, Pre-College Outreach, Project Fast Forward, Student and Academic Services, Summer Transition Program, and Vocational Rehabilitation. The position reports to NRSC Senior Director and provide programmatic support.
Responsibilities:
  • Plan and manage the long-term, short-term and day-to-day operations and logistics of assigned internal and/or external programs. This includes being the point of contact for such programmatic initiatives for speakers, trainers, participants, and other stakeholders.
  • Responsible for NRSC projects including annual Regional and National MathCompetitions. This include but is not limited to: finding host sites, negotiating contracts for venues and services, confirming logistics, marketing and recruiting of students and the like.
  • For additional NRSC projects, such as regional STEM Days and conferences, the position will assist other NRSC personnel, including the K-12 teacher trainer, STEM Academy Director, and Senior Director, in accomplishing project goals.
  • Work with the NRSC Senior Director in planning, identifying, inviting and confirming instructors, speakers, support staff, and participants for programs. Carry out contracts and agreements in programming efforts.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and staff, and community/educational leaders (both internally and externally) in planning and carrying out NRSC activities, including determining supplies, instructional materials, technologies and equipment needed.
  • Hire, train, and manage student employees, and lead student teams for on-campus and off-campus programs.
  • Work with NTID's Marketing Communications department to strategize, develop and manage communications (electronic and paper) with external audiences to market NRSC programs, and conduct outreach to encourage participation.
  • Assist the NRSC Senior Director with data collection, tracking and analysis for the purpose of evaluating impact of programs on enrollment pipeline and retention.
  • Maintain communications and collaboration with the NTID Regional STEM Center (NRSC) at Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind, and additional sites that may be established. Provide assistance with resources, staffing and logistics for programs as needed. Assist with tracking, evaluating and documenting the impact of NRSC activities for reporting purposes.
  • As requested, conduct presentations and trainings on Outreach, Transition and STEM topics at conferences and related programs.
  • Provide assistance with resources and staffing for programs as needed for the NTID Office of External Affairs, NTID Admissions, NTID Outreach and other relevant internal departments.

Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience:
  • Bachelors degree in Education, Human Services, Business, Communication, STEM or related fields
  • 1-3 years of related experience or equivalent.
Skills:
  • Strong communication, organization and time management skills.
  • Highly flexible and able to work effectively in a team oriented, fast-paced and outcome-oriented environment.
  • Ability to make programmatic judgments and decisions as necessary.
  • Sensitivity to ethnic, socioeconomic and communication diversity.
  • American Sign Language skills or willingness to learn to be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of prospective DHH students and individuals.
