Your application must reflect that you possess the required qualifications for the position.No sponsorship is available for this position.No agencies or 3rd party vendors.POSITION SUMMARY: PACUA Registered Professional Nurse accountable for the coordination and delivery of quality patient care, based on age, in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the pre-operative/operative & post-operative periods of patient care. He/She shall perform nursing functions in accordance with the policies, procedures, and objectives of the Nursing Services. Perform other duties as directed by Manager of Surgical Services.Position Responsibilities
  • Has knowledge of all types of anesthesia and complications which may occur; possesses clear knowledge of nursing interventions for those complications. Possesses working knowledge of Pharmacology.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and aseptic environment for patients and others in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit.
  • Maintains and respects all patient rights and cares for the patient in a dignified and compassionate manner. Maintains and respects all patient related information (confidentiality).
  • Provides a written assessment of the patient on admission and updates continuously during their Post Anesthesia Care Unit stay. Evaluates care and needs of each patient specifically related to age, then reports assessment to Anesthesia, Surgery staff, and physician.
  • Implements nursing plan of care based on physician orders and nursing diagnosis with regard to age in accordance with established Policies and Procedures and safety precautions.
  • Monitors and documents patient: airway, respirations, blood pressure, pulse every 10 minutes, or as patient condition demands, cardiac rhythm, level of consciousness, skin integrity, IV fluids, etc. Monitors drains, tubes, dressings, possible drainage and Irrigation (if possible).
  • Is self-directed with personal and learning needs on an ongoing basis. Seeks learning opportunities to meet the identified needs through formal and informal means.
  • Ability, skills, and knowledge to evaluate, observe, care and counsel patients, and administer medications and treatments as prescribed by a licensed physician, dentist, or podiatrist.
  • Assists patient in frequent deep breathing and coughing, as well as walking and orientation to surroundings and reassures patient. Patient will remain in PACU until appropriate criteria is met, R.N. will then transfer patient to appropriate unit.
  • Patient families, nursing staff and physician(s) will be notified of the transfer. Assists in development of Post-Op education with regard to age utilizing all available resources.
  • Demonstrates integrity, dependability and resourcefulness, demonstrates enthusiasm for work.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of educational programs; changes to meet personal learning needs.
  • Is responsible and accountable to the Manager of Surgical Services for maintaining current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification as required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and supports the philosophy, goals and objectives of the Post Anesthesia Care Department, Illinois Nursing Act, Hospital and Nursing Policies and Procedures.
  • Acts as a resource person regarding patient care, specialty area, orientation and teaching of the staff.
  • Strives for quality in patient care and as necessary, challenges and/or corrects errors of peers to ensure patient safety and wellbeing.
  • Accountable for own conduct and promotes good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.
  • Participates in and supports research programs and activities and performance improvement activities; also participates in nursing committees and other activities which promote the growth and development of nursing and/or patient care. Has attended 16 hours of continuing education annually.
  • Assists with maintenance of equipment assigned to patient care and reports problems and or orders services as needed.
  • Maintains mandatory educational requirements based on JCAHO, IDPH, and OSHA.
  • Counts narcotics at beginning and end of all shifts with another RN, per hospital policy.
  • Meets dress code standards: adheres to policy on “Operating Room Dress Code”.
  • Reports to work as scheduled, ready to receive assignment. Minimal absenteeism.
  • Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  • Attends staff meetings; reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes.
  • Takes call duty. Performs proficiently while on call.
  • Shall be floated to the Medical Surgical unit, Emergency department, and Intensive Care unit as needed.
  • Maintain required training and/or education per hospital guidelines.
  • Follow and maintain all lawful safety, health requirements and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment for peers, patients and community.
  • Promptly report safety issues such hazardous conditions, job-related injury or illness, and seek guidance or treatment.
  • Adheres to all professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory organizations.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patient and records.
  • Portrays a professional and positive attitude for peers, patients and community.
  • Other duties as assigned
Education
  • Current Registered Nurse Licensure in the State of Illinois.
  • BLS certification required.
  • ACLS certification required.
  • PALS certification required.
Experience
  • Minimum of two-year work experience in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit preferred.
  • Needs to be an effective communicator with good organizational skills.
  • Must be in good physical and mental health, and able to work under pressure.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • Able to work under pressure and relate to hospital staff and visitors.
  • Frequently exposed to a variety of work hazards (disease, needle sticks, body fluids, etc.).
  • Requires long periods of standing at times.
  • Requires quick movement, agility and fast response time.
  • Requires direct patient contact with potential exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Frequent repositioning of patients.
  • Ability to perform CPR – a strenuous activity.
  • Must be available to take Call Duty.

POSITION SUMMARY: SDSA Registered Professional Nurse promotes and restores patient’s health by completing the nursing process; collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary team members; providing physical and psychological support to patients, friends, and families. He/She shall perform nursing functions in accordance with the policies, procedures, and objectives of the Nursing Department. The RNs responsibilities encompasses compliance with The Joint Commission standards, CMS, OSHA, IDPH, the Illinois Nurse Practice Act and state regulations. Position Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintains and respects all patient rights and cares for the patient in a dignified and compassionate manner.
  • Maintains and respects all patient related information (confidentiality).
  • Assesses physical, psychological, social, spiritual and educational needs of the patient and family specifically related to age.
  • Applies knowledge of illnesses, injuries, and diseases and uses available resources in the assessment process with regard to age.
  • Documents an assessment of the patient on admission and updates continuously throughout the hospitalization.
  • Initiates and documents an age specific plan of care based on nursing diagnosis and applies knowledge of specific illness, injuries, and diseases, and human behavior.
  • Utilizes all available resources in planning care, and consults with other members of the Multidisciplinary Health Care Team.
  • Oversees initial intake of information from patients having surgical procedures.
  • Performs pre-assessment, obtaining pertinent medical history by phone or in-person. Coordinates with physicians to complete appropriate testing, labs/studies in a timely manner.
  • Provides information and instructions for surgical procedures.
  • Answers patient questions and addresses any concerns that may arise before day of procedure.
  • Provides assistance with outside resources as needed to assist with patient needs.
  • Promotes patient’s independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching patients, friends, and family to understand condition, medications, and self-care skills; answering questions.
  • Documents age specific nursing orders on the nursing care plan, develops realistic short and long term goals specifying expected outcomes and target dates following intervention.
  • Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments;
  • Continuously updating the plan of care based on ongoing assessments.
  • Transcribes and enters physician orders into the electronic medical record when necessary.
  • Assists in development of discharge planning with regard to age utilizing all available resources.
  • Is self-directed with personal and learning needs on an ongoing basis. Seeks learning opportunities to meet the identified needs through formal and informal means and keeps educational records current.
  • Supports the philosophy, goals and objectives of the Nursing Department.
  • Acts as a resource person regarding patient care, specialty area, orientation and teaching of the staff. Participates in the peer interviewing process.
  • Accountable for own conduct and promotes good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.
  • Participates in and supports quality and performance improvement activities; also participates in nursing committees and other activities which promote the growth and development of nursing and/or patient care. Has attended 20 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
  • Ensures operation of equipment assigned to patient care by completing preventative maintenance requirements; following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions and reports problems and or orders services as needed.
  • Maintains supplies inventory by checking expiration dates and stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders of supplies.
  • Attends at least 80% of all scheduled unit meetings held, and read the meeting minutes.
  • Maintain required training and/or education per hospital guidelines.
  • Follow and maintain all lawful safety, health rules and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment for peers, patients and community.
  • Promptly report safety issues such hazardous conditions, job-related injury or illness, and seek guidance or treatment.

Education/Licensure or Credentials
  • Current Registered Nurse Licensure in the State of Illinois.
  • BLS Certification required within 6 months of hire.
  • ACLS Certification required within 6 months of hire.
  • PALS Certification required within 6 months of hire.
Experience
  • Minimum of two-year experience in the Medical Surgical or Surgical Department preferred.
  • Previous telemetry experience desirable.
  • Must show competency of those skills designated by the Surgical Services Manager by exam and/or demonstration.
  • Must be in good physical and mental health, and able to work under pressure.
  • Must have good teaching and communication skills.
  • The ability to operate designated computer equipment.
