Medical Assistant

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

(In compliance with the American with Disabilities Act, ADA, this description identifies the essential components of the job required to be performed with or without reasonable accommodations. General Clinical Functions

  • Assist physicians with the following procedures and accurately documenting in Resource according to practice protocol:
    • IUIs
    • Ultrasounds (stim, pregnancy, 3D)
    • Saline sonograms
    • Post Op Exams
    • Physical Exams
    • Biopsies (cervical or endometrial polyps / retained POC)
    • Catheter Removals
    • Laminaria Insertions
    • Cyst or Fluid aspiration
  • Keep the physician on schedule by anticipating their needs and being available to assist.
  • Perform and recorded height, weight and blood pressure for all new patients, follow up patients that have not had a BMI done within a year and if on a lab order and document according to protocol in Resource. DSD patients require height, weight, blood pressure, respiration rate, pulse and temperature to be performed and recorded.
  • Obtain blood specimens and collect non-blood specimens for laboratory testing as ordered; use aseptic technique and in accordance with department procedures.
    • Follow Practice policies & protocols when verifying, collecting, labeling and processing specimens.
    • Write initials, date, time, all tubes used on copy of lab orders. Attach copies of all requisitions to the orders to be placed in file for up 3 months.
    • Second Check test requisitions, type of tubes and labels for all orders processed prior to sending out. Initial, date and time all collections when second checked.
  • Verbally ask then visually verify patient information prior to procedures and blood draws:
    • Patients full name, date of birth, last 4 of social security if applicable. (For IUIs verifies both patient and partners name, date of birth and full social if any or the specimen information if using donor)
    • Confirm insurance with patient prior to drawing labs to ensure correct specimens are being collected. Make sure it is updated in resource prior to patient leaving
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations, and calling for assistance from other health care support personnel when appropriate.
  • Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
  • Ensure operation of equipment by following manufacturers instructions; advise manager when there are equipment problems or failures.
  • Keep work area neat and clean; clean exam rooms promptly; clean sinks and counter tops in clinical areas.
  • Restock daily supplies; advise Team Lead / Clinical Manager when stock needs replenishing; distribute clinical supplies as needed.
  • Cooperate with office operations by assisting with the Physician team responsibilities as needed.

Patient Interaction

  • Escort patients to and from phlebotomy area or examination rooms, and direct or escort patients to the front desk upon the completion of the patients clinical treatment.
  • Comfort patients by anticipating patients anxieties; answering patients questions within the scope of the position; maintaining neat, clean examination rooms.
  • Provide quality care by adhering to therapeutic standards; follow practice, physician and nursing division philosophies, as well as standards of care set by the state and other governing agency regulations.

Teamwork

  • Consistently work in a positive and cooperative manner.
  • Assist in the orientation/training of new team members when requested by manager.
  • Assist other team members in the performance of their assignments.
  • Consider the impact of your actions on team members throughout the Practice

  • Recognize the need for variations in staffing and volunteer to fill open shifts.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to perform duties wherever volume deems it necessary within the Practice.
  • Work weekends & holidays as needed and/or scheduled.

  • Work shifts starting as early as 6:45am and as late as 7:30pm. (Will be scheduled 1 or more days per week as needed for staffing)

CONFIDENTIAL AND SENSITIVE INFORMATION:

  • Maintain patient confidence and protect operations by keeping all patient and proprietary information confidential.

SCOPE OF FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Participate in cost containment by appropriate use of medical and office supplies, and other budget requirements as communicated by practice management.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Cooperate with office administration by filing medical records and other clinical documents.
  • Understand Practice purchasing policies, including knowledge of vendors, instruments and supplies, as well as shipping and receiving procedures.
  • Maintain daily, monthly, and yearly inventory for all clinical supplies and instruments.
  • Maintain dating system for recall of supplies according to limit of shelf life.
  • Process supply requests in a prompt, cooperative, and efficient manner.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational in-service training and by attending staff meetings
  • Completing online training as required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/PERFORMANCE FACTOR REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of Certified Medical Assistant Program required. State certification preferred.
  • Entry level accepted; 6 months experience in a physician practice preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and rules required.
  • Ability to access, input, and retrieves information from a computer.
  • Knowledge of office procedure and office machines (i.e. computer, fax, copier, etc.).
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to communicate accurately and concisely with excellent interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting, and supporting patients. Grasping and feeling are necessary body movements.
  • Sensory requirements of speech, touch, vision, and hearing to normal range, with or without correction.
  • Requires manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination for easy and skillful use of hands when working with patients and equipment.

Mental Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to perform concentrated and complex mental activity with frequent involvement in complex and highly technical situations.
  • Must have the ability to work successfully under stressful conditions, and must be capable of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a frequent basis.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Will work in an inside environment with temperature control.
  • Occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens or other potentially infectious materials may reasonably be anticipated from the performance of patient care duties.
  • Some physical hazards, i.e. needle pricks, etc.
  • Some electrical hazards working with equipment. Some examples of equipment used are computer terminal, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, telephone, and patient care items requiring electricity.
  • Weekends, late shifts, holidays and some overtime will be required.
  • Work routines/schedules/locations are occasionally subject to change on short notice.
