Summary:

The Laboratory Technician performs routine laboratory tasks to support medical laboratory scientists in providing quality and timely laboratory results for patients. His or her main responsibility is to perform specimen processing in a busy hospital-based laboratory with minimal supervision. Computer knowledge, ability to multitask, and positive customer service interactions are also required.

Experience/Education Requirements:

Responsibilities:

  • Accurately perform all department related computer functions, including but not limited to:
  • Faxing results, entering orders, updating pertinent specimen information, documenting clinically significant communication in the electronic medical record, routine data entry.
  • Receive, sort, aliquot, process and store biological specimens in preparation for clinical testing; process add-on order requests and send out testing samples.
  • Prepare samples for analysis according to procedures. Retrieve samples from designated areas to prepare for storage or transport.
  • Set up cultures on biological specimens.
  • Load biological specimens on laboratory instrumentation for clinical testing.
  • Perform and document quality control and maintenance checks as required by manufacturers and regulatory agencies.
  • Document and report any deviations from policies and procedures via the incident reporting system as well as communicating with departmental leadership.
  • Follow all established policies and procedures including Safety and Compliance.
  • Maintain a neat and efficient work area.
  • Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains using established formulas and stock solutions.
  • Maintain and replenish inventory levels of laboratory materials; rotate stock using older reagents first. Assist with lab supply management including restocking lab supplies
  • Reporting atypical sample or equipment behavior to supervisor.
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of how Specimen Processing impacts the testing laboratory.
  • Identifies problems and in some cases, may resolve issues with specimen types such as missing information etc.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the compliance policies related to test ordering, which requires developing the ability to research test ordering information on translation tables, computer systems, and the directory of services.
  • Understands the complex relationship between test(s) ordered and specimen received.
  • Completes all required documentation, legibly and within the assigned timeframe.
  • Meets standards for production and accuracy within 3 months.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • This individual is responsible for specimen processing and the analysis, evaluation and reporting of waived and moderately complex laboratory test results, in accordance with established departmental procedures and professional standards, to provide appropriate specimens and accurate data in a timely manner.

Exposure/Sensory Requirements

Exposure to:
Chemicals: HCL, Sodium carbonate, Acetic acid, perhaps others as preservatives for some specimen collection, white out.
Video Display Terminals: Average
Blood and Body Fluids: This job requires obtaining blood and body fluid specimens so potential for exposure is very high. Accept specimens from patients, label and deliver blood to lab, accept blood from nurses and floors.
TB or Airborne Pathogens: Direct patient contact provides high risk of exposure to TB and other airborne pathogens.

Sensory requirements (speech, vision, smell, hearing, touch):
Speech: Necessary for all communication with customers whether direct or via phone.
Vision: Needed for proper order entry into computer system.
Smell: N/A
Hearing: Needed to listen to customers and patients.
Touch: Required for performing phlebotomy, i.e., feeling for vein location and obtaining specimens as well as specimen processing.

Supply stock - 50' maximum distance normally carried to fill cabinets from floor to above shoulders. Possibly help to lift baby. Lift printer paper and roll of labels to bar code printer. Printer paper would generally be carried only to its destination on the floor from storage. Bar code labels are lifted to shoulder height to load printer.
