Position Title: Library Media Specialist Paraprofessional

Classification: Hourly

Immediate Supervisor: School Principal

Position Overview:
The major job responsibility of the Library Media Specialist Paraprofessional position is to provide accessible tools and
materials in order to support and enhance the learning process for students. Knowledge of curricular areas is essential in
order to serve the interdisciplinary needs of the learning community. The Library Media Specialist Paraprofessional will
manage the library collection and perform a variety of media center responsibilities, including working with whole group
and small groups of students in developing media skills and supporting STEM2 units of instruction. It is the goal of the
Library Media Specialist Paraprofessional to work in a flexible environment, collaborating with staff, teaching skills to
students and staff while maintaining the effective and efficient operations of the Media Center.

Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities

  1. Provide instruction to students individually, in small group or whole group which supports the grade-level STEM2 curriculum units.
  2. Prepares materials as needed for instruction.
  3. Develops and reinforces acceptable student behavior, attitudes and social skills while in the Media Center.
  4. Informs students and staff of available technology/media and assists with its integration in the classroom.
  5. Encourages staff and students to access the media center and its resources.
  6. Collaborates with teachers and others to plan and implement meaningful student experiences that will promote a love of reading and lifelong learning habits.
  7. Selects and maintains collections media materials that compliments and supplements the district’s STEM2 curriculum.
  8. Maintains an accurate and current inventory of media materials/equipment and submits reports in a timely manner.
  9. Plans, develops and encourages selection and purchase of age/interest appropriate literary and media materials in collaboration with students and staff.
  10. Processes check-ins/check-outs of books, reference materials and audio-visual resources, etc. to staff and students.
  11. Selects materials for a variety of student/staff interests, learning styles and reading levels.
  12. Catalogs and processes new books and equipment.
  13. Eliminates out dated, inappropriate and unsuitable materials.
  14. Prepares materials for circulation.
  15. Arranges for the inspection, maintenance, replacement and repair of media under the realm of the responsibility assigned by the District.
  16. Coordinates and organizes special events and book fairs in the Media Center.
  17. Performs general office duties including answering phone, greeting students and staff, typing, copying, filing and sorting materials.
  18. Supervises and trains student and adult volunteers.
  19. Arranges flexible scheduling of the school library hours in order to provide accessibility for all staff and students.
  20. Attends staff and department meetings.
  21. Provides and plans professional development opportunities within the school and district for and with all staff, including other school librarians.
  22. Remains current in professional practices and developments, information technologies and educational research applicable to school library programs.
  23. Supervises students before school, during lunch time/recess and after school as a daily assigned duty.
  24. Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the School Principal and/or District Administration.

Education• An AA degree or 60 hours of college credits
• A Bachelor’s degree in Library Media/Science

Licenses or Certifications• A valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
• CPR and First Aid Certificates
• Substitute Certificate

Experience• Experience in working with elementary students
• Demonstrates knowledge of technology use
• Experience working with an ethnically diverse urban population
• Experience working with minority and ELL students
• Experience in Library Management Systems

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities 
• Bilingual, English and Spanish.
• Strong technology skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, teachers, parents and administrators.
• Willingness to pursue additional training in job-related areas.
• Ability to bend, carry and lift 40 pounds, kneels, push and pull 25 lbs.
• Ability to maintain a safe, learning environment.
• Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance.
• Have demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others.

Working Environment• The work environment is a normal school setting; the noise level ranges from quiet to loud, but is usually moderate.
• The playground setting can include exposure to dirt, dust and extreme seasonal temperatures.

Terms of Employment• Nine-months, At-Will, Hourly; benefits in accordance with Governing Board policies.
