Position Overview

Riverdale’s History Department seeks an enthusiastic and collaborative History teacher to cover a fall semester leave replacement in seventh-grade History and Constructing America, a yearlong American Studies course taken by all high school juniors. Our ideal candidate is passionate about the discipline of history and its diverse perspectives and committed to expanding and enriching their pedagogical approach. Teachers with expertise in Colonial and Early American History through the Civil War are especially suited for the course's first-semester focus. Our seventh-grade history course is simulation-based and focused on American Civics. Teachers who have team-taught Humanities courses and worked cross-divisionally are desirable candidates.

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and past teaching experience is required for this position.

Necessary Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree or higher in History or American Studies;
• 3-5 years experience teaching American History at the Middle and Upper School level in secondary school settings; 
• Effectively uses a range of primary and secondary sources to help students engage with and understand multiple perspectives and grapple with historical nuance in an age-appropriate way;
• Builds a classroom community that can explore challenging aspects of history in a way that supports content understanding, skill development, and student well-being;

• An interest in engaging students in an environment that is both supportive and rigorous;
• Experienced in interdisciplinary teaching and learning;
• Willing to participate in community activities, including advising groups, service opportunities, or other co-curricular offerings;
• Demonstrates collegiality, collaboration, teamwork, and organization;
• Demonstrates commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work.

Sabbatical: Full time teaching faculty are eligible for a sabbatical after 10 years of employment.
