We are looking for a Control Systems Engineerto conduct research, design, development, testing, troubleshooting and maintenance of different aspects of process control and automation including but not limited to PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, instrumentation, physical and wireless networks, switches, computers, and servers.

This is a great opportunity to join a technical team and contribute to the success of Rio Tinto. The position of Control System Engineer exists to support and improve Fixed Plant Operations, including Boric Acid Plant, Primary Process Plant, Fusing Plant, and Shipping Plant.

Reporting to theSuperintendent, Engineering & Controls and working in a challenging and excited environment, you will be:

  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental and quality programs and standards for Rio Tinto and outside regulatory agencies.
  • Establish a constructive culture in the team by demonstrating and utilizing appropriate leadership behavior, symbols, and systems.
  • Work with Process Control professionals to implement process control improvements.
  • Participate in weekend, holidays and after hours on call schedule.
  • Communicate with others to ensure successful checkout, start-up, and commissioning of projects involving PLCs.
  • Participate as needed in functional check-outs of new equipment and develop control system standards and ensure that the documentation is up to date.
  • Instruct electricians in field device work related to the control systems to assure field devices are interfaced, tested, and functioning correctly.
  • Manage the control systems hardware. This includes troubleshooting problems with input/output errors, controllers, consoles, networks, analyzing equipment failure logs, etc. and managing spare parts inventory.
  • Lead or assist troubleshooting efforts associated with the control systems to avoid or minimize production upsets and/or downtime.
  • Support Operations by assisting in training operators on how the control systems functions and in diagnosing operating problems.
  • Read and interpret drawings (P&ID, Logic, etc.) sketches, graphs, charts, vendor specifications, and instructional materials to make equipment work properly.
  • Ensure repair of the Control System peripherals, and associated equipment in order to support production demand.
  • Be open to work on different assignments as needed.

What you'll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical, Computer or Electronics or related field experience.
  • Expertise in troubleshooting and repair of Control Systems.
  • Prior experience with Allen Bradley or Modicon PLCs and Factorytalk View or Wonderware HMIs.
  • Prior experience with different networks including but not limited to Modbus , Ethernet and DeviceNet is an asset.
  • Experience with Thin Manager, Virtual Machines (VMs), Servers, Networks, Radios and Switches is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills for complex problems that are encountered.
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn and to make an impact.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in teams, influence people, make critical decisions, and communicate effectively with a variety of personnel.
